Psara Holocaust Commemoration – Annual Memorial on the Heroic Island
Every last Sunday of June, the Greek island of Psara commemorates the 1824 Holocaust in which the last defenders blew up their own powder magazine rather than surrender. Religious ceremonies, poetry, a torch procession and a firework re-enactment honour their sacrifice.
