Adventsmarkt Bischofszell is one of Eastern Switzerland’s best-known pre-Christmas markets – in 2026 for the 30th time, Friday 27 to Sunday 29 November, across the historic old town. The Adventsmarkt Bischofszell association runs it with the town (market lead Franco Capelli, building department). Entry is free. More than 120 stalls spread, pram-friendly, from Grubplatz-West via Bogenturm, the museum garden, Marktgasse, Hirschenplatz and Tuchgasse to upper Kirchgasse.

Hours 2026: Friday 17:00–21:00, Saturday 11:00–21:00, Sunday 11:00–18:00. Official opening is Friday 27 November at 18:00 in front of the town hall: welcome, music, a procession of “bishops”, Samichlaus figures with donkeys and angel girls. Bischofszell sits in canton Thurgau between St. Gallen, Weinfelden and Lake Constance, on regional rail. It is a weekend market, not a month-long fair – you come on purpose for the first Advent weekend.

Program & Schedule: What to Expect in 2026

The market is a three-day ritual. Friday is opening night: stalls from 17:00, procession at 18:00 – if you want Samichlaus and the angel girls, be on the town-hall square on time, not still in upper Kirchgasse at 19:00. Saturday is the main day, 11:00–21:00, with the association’s evening music (stage times on adventsmarkt-bischofszell.ch). Sunday stays family-friendly until 18:00, no late night.

The point is the route: you walk a decorated small town, not a hut row. Crafts, gifts, club stalls and the eight Beizli spread so Hirschenplatz, Marktgasse and the museum garden each have their own density. Bischofszell has long billed itself as one of Eastern Switzerland’s most beautiful Advent markets – it holds because the setting is genuinely historic and the mix is local rather than chain-carnival. Old-town circuit: Grubplatz, Bogenturm, Marktgasse, Hirschenplatz

The market starts at Grubplatz-West, passes the Bogenturm, the museum garden, Marktgasse, Hirschenplatz, Tuchgasse and finishes on upper Kirchgasse. It is more pram-friendly than many medieval markets, but still cobbles. To see it all, walk the axis twice – out in daylight, back when the Beizli are steaming. The town hall is the opening landmark and meeting point.

Friday 27 November 2026, 18:00: speeches, music, the town’s bishop figures, Samichlaus with donkeys, angel girls with a surprise. That is the emotional start of the anniversary year and the picture families should not miss. The crowd then fans into the lanes. Saturday-only visitors skip exactly this scene.

Carousel, nativity and Adventsbeizli

The nostalgic carousel and the life-size nativity are the family anchors. Eight Beizli – up from seven in earlier editions – hold punch and hot food across the old town, not in one food court. Seats are limited; on a cold Friday the first hut stop after the opening matters.

Sternenmarkt St. Gallen after the Bischofszell weekend

Start the 30th-edition weekend here, then use Sternenmarkt in St. Gallen (Gallusplatz, UNESCO Abbey District, 26 November to 24 December 2026) as the longer city market. Rail via Gossau/St. Gallen. Bischofszell is the dense old-town weekend; St. Gallen is the four-week light market of the regional capital.

Weinfelden Advent market – two weeks later

12–13 December 2026 in Weinfelden old town, Saturday 11:00–21:00, Sunday 11:00–18:00, run by the local trade association, with a music stage, free entry. A Thurgau double: first Advent weekend in Bischofszell, third weekend in Weinfelden, Sternenmarkt or Appenzell in between.

Arbon Christkindlimarkt on Lake Constance

Saturday 28 November 2026, 10:00–19:00 – overlapping Bischofszell’s Saturday. Arbon’s lakeside old town is a possible add-on if you have a car and want Constance shore. If you hate rushing, stay in Bischofszell and keep Arbon for another year or a Saturday morning before the stage programme.

Appenzell, Trogen and the rest of first Advent

The same weekend holds other Eastern Swiss markets (Trogen’s 40th Advent market, Appenzell pre-Christmas fairs). Bischofszell remains Thurgau’s flagship with 120 stalls and a jubilee. A three-market dash on 28 November underestimates the density – pick one town and do it properly.

Visitor Tips: Travel & Accommodation in Bischofszell

• Getting there: Train to Bischofszell Stadt or Bischofszell Nord, then walk into the old town. Rail from St. Gallen, Weinfelden and Romanshorn. By car, park on the edge – do not drive Marktgasse. The town is small; 15 minutes on foot covers the whole market.
• Weather: Late November in Thurgau is wet-cold. Sturdy shoes for cobbles, gloves for Friday evening outdoors at the town hall. Sunday until 18:00 is often the easiest family slot.
• Stay: Few hotels in town – book early or sleep in Weinfelden, Amriswil, St. Gallen or on the lake (Arbon, Romanshorn). For a single evening, return to St. Gallen.
• While you are there: Historic town hall, paper museum/PM1 (separate dates), a walk to the Thur. The market alone fills Friday night or all of Saturday.
• When to go: Friday 18:00 for the jubilee opening; Saturday from 11:00 for stalls and music; Sunday for a quieter carousel-and-nativity loop. You do not need all three days – two windows are enough.
