Aldrei fór ég suður – "I Never Went South"
On 26 and 27 March 2027, the small Westfjords town of Ísafjörður hosts one of Europe's most remarkable music festivals: Aldrei fór ég suður, which translates from Icelandic as "I never went south." The name says it all: this festival proudly celebrates the music and culture of Iceland's remote north, far from the Reykjavík scene. Founded in 2004 by musician Mugison and his father Guðmundur Kristjánsson, the festival has taken place every Easter weekend since then. Entry is completely free, and every band performs without payment.

Program and Concept
Both evenings open at 7:00 PM. The stage belongs exclusively to Icelandic musicians, from emerging local talent to well-known names in the national music scene. Each band gets exactly 20 minutes on stage with no sound check and no hierarchy of fame. This creates the uniquely egalitarian atmosphere that has defined the festival for over two decades. Ríkisútvarpið (Iceland's national broadcaster RÚV) streams the festival live on Rás 2 as part of a newly signed 5-year partnership agreement.
Tickets and Admission
Admission to Aldrei fór ég suður is and always has been entirely free. No tickets, no pre-registration required. The festival is funded through sponsors, support from the municipality of Ísafjarðarbær, and sales of official merchandise on site (hats, jumpers, temporary tattoos). Anyone wishing to support the festival can buy merchandise or sign up as a volunteer.
Getting to Ísafjörður
- By air: Fly into Keflavík (KEF), transfer to Reykjavík domestic airport (RKV), then take an Icelandair domestic flight to Ísafjörður (approx. 40-50 minutes). Book flights early as capacity is limited.
- By car: Around 5-6 hours' drive from Reykjavík; check road conditions for March on road.is before departure.
- The festival venue (Kampi) is roughly 10 minutes on foot from the town centre.
Visitor Tips
- Book accommodation very early: Ísafjörður fills up over Easter due to both the festival and Ski Week.
- Dress in layers: it can be very warm inside the warehouse and bitterly cold outside in March.
- Leave the dress shoes at home; solid footwear and a woolly jumper are the right call.
- Be prepared for weather-related flight disruptions on the Reykjavík-Ísafjörður route.
- The Westfjords are one of Iceland's most beautiful and remote regions: leave time to explore.
