Event Details

Welcome to the Armata Festival on Spetses 2026

From 8 to 13 September 2026, the small island of Spetses in the Saronic Gulf becomes the stage for its biggest celebration of the year. The Armata Festival commemorates the Naval Battle of Spetses on 8 September 1822, one of the most significant events of the Greek War of Independence, in which the fleets of Spetses, Hydra and Psara turned back the Ottoman armada. The highlight is the nighttime reenactment of the battle, featuring the burning of a replica of the Ottoman flagship in the Old Harbour, followed by fireworks.

Highlights

  • Reenactment of the 1822 naval battle in the Old Harbour
  • Burning of a replica of the Ottoman flagship
  • Grand fireworks display closing the reenactment
  • A tradition dating back to 1931
  • A full week of concerts, theatre performances and exhibitions
  • Participation of the Hellenic Navy with a ship and honor detachment
  • Ceremonial reception at Spetses Town Hall ahead of the reenactment

Program

The celebrations span a full week and include concerts, theatre performances, exhibitions and religious ceremonies centered on the small chapel of Panagia Armata above the Old Harbour, built because the people of Spetses credited their victory to the Virgin Mary. The highlight falls on Saturday, 12 September, when the historic ceremony begins around 5:30 PM and the actual battle reenactment takes place around 8:30 PM: a replica of the Ottoman ship is towed out into the water and set alight while the historical events are narrated in Greek and English, followed by a fireworks display closing the evening.

Tickets

The Armata Festival is organized by the Municipality of Spetses, and the celebrations and battle reenactment are free to attend. The detailed daily program is usually published around a month in advance on the municipality's official channels.

  • Find a spot along the Old Harbour early for the best view of the reenactment.
  • Expect large crowds, especially on Saturday evening during the main reenactment.
  • Book restaurants and tavernas around the Old Harbour in advance, as they get very busy during the festival.
