On 31 December 2026 Athens welcomes 2027 in the historic centre – around Syntagma Square, Monastiraki and rooftops facing the Acropolis. The city’s official open-air countdown has been free in recent years and typically starts at 22:00; the confirmed 2026/2027 artist line-up had not been published as of August 2026. Visitors who want a table with a view should book rooftop restaurants and hotel packages well in advance.

Program & Schedule: What to Expect in 2026/2027
The official artist programme for New Year’s Eve 2026/2027 is usually announced in December. In recent years the City of Athens show on Syntagma Square opened at 22:00 with the municipal philharmonic, continued with live sets and hosts, then moved into a mayoral countdown, a large drone display and fireworks at midnight. The Region of Attica and the SNFCC have staged parallel free concerts. Many visitors start with dinner on an Acropolis-view rooftop (A for Athens and 360 Cocktail Bar in Monastiraki, GB Roof Garden at Syntagma) and walk to the square, or stay on the terrace for midnight.
After 00:00 the crowd spills into Plaka and Monastiraki and into clubs. A confirmed reservation is essential if you want the fireworks from a roof: popular terraces sell out weeks ahead. Check cityofathens.gr and thisisathens.org for the published 2026/2027 timetable once it is released.
Tickets & Admission for New Year’s Eve Athens
The municipal open-air event on Syntagma Square has been free in recent years; no ticket is required for the public countdown. Costs apply only to optional rooftop menus, hotel galas and club nights. For 2025/2026, mid-range rooftop parties were often around EUR 85–160 per person, while luxury hotel dinners (for example GB Roof Garden) reached several hundred euros, in some cases up to about EUR 650. 2026/2027 package prices were not widely published in August 2026 – book directly with each venue. Public squares and parks are expected to remain free if the city follows its usual format.
Visitor Tips: Travel & Accommodation in Athens
- Getting there: Metro lines 2 and 3 serve Syntagma; lines 1 and 3 serve Monastiraki. The neighbourhoods are walkable. Cars and taxis are slow in the centre on 31 December – check OASA for extended night service.
- Weather and clothing: Late December nights in Athens are often around 7–10 °C and can be damp or windy. Wear layers, a warm coat, a scarf and shoes with grip for marble and cobblestones.
- Stay: Hotels and apartments in Plaka, Monastiraki and Syntagma book out early for New Year’s Eve; reserve ahead and expect higher rates.
- Book any Acropolis-view rooftop restaurant or bar in advance; walk-ins are unlikely on this night.
- After midnight, a walk from Monastiraki through the lit lanes toward Plaka or back to Syntagma is part of the city’s atmosphere – keep valuables close in the crowds.
