Welcome to the Basel Christmas Market 2026 in Basel

Christmas in Basel 2026 is split across several distinct markets, not one continuous fairground. The official cantonal market on Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz runs from 26 November to 23 December 2026, daily 11:00–20:30 (earlier on the last day). It is joined by the Adväntsgass on Rheingasse in Kleinbasel (same dates) and by a new Christmas village at Theaterplatz, announced by the Presidential Department to run from 26 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. Entry to every site is free. The classic market is organised by the Canton of Basel-Stadt; Verein Basler Weihnacht coordinates the public face via basel.com and baslerweihnacht.ch.

About 150 wooden chalets sit between the Barfüsser Church and the Minster. European Best Destinations named Basel Best Christmas Market in Europe in 2021; tourism figures cite around 900,000 visits a season. City lights switch on 26 November 2026 and run daily 15:00–22:30 until 3 January 2027. Treat the four locations as separate stops: Grossbasel old town, the Münster hill, Theaterplatz, and Kleinbasel across the Mittlere Brücke.

Highlights & Attractions at the Basel Christmas Market in Basel

  • Two official cantonal markets with around 150 chalets on Barfüsserplatz (around the Barfüsser Church) and Münsterplatz (in front of the Minster) – free entry.
  • The Johann Wanner Christmas tree and glowing snow-globe lights in the trees on Münsterplatz, the city’s signature view since 2011.
  • A roughly 13-metre mulled-wine pyramid on Barfüsserplatz, serving red and white Glühwein.
  • Adväntsgass on Rheingasse: fondue in a gondola, a food mile and a younger Kleinbasel mood, 26 November to 23 December 2026.
  • New 2026 Christmas village at Theaterplatz and around Elisabethenkirche: local design, social projects and food, planned through 3 January 2027.
  • Märliwald fairytale forest by Robi-Spiel-Aktionen on Münsterplatz (26 November–22 December): pewter casting, candle dipping, gingerbread, puppet theatre.
  • The Basel Wish Book in the Town Hall courtyard, flame-grilled salmon on Münsterplatz, Feuerzangenbowle on Barfüsserplatz, and the lit St Martin’s tower (about 6 EUR, Mon–Fri 16:00–18:00).

Program & Schedule: What to Expect in 2026

Basel’s 2026 markets have different characters, last-day hours and, in one case, a later closing date – do not treat them as a single market. The cantonal sites on Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz run 26 November to 23 December 2026, 11:00–20:30 daily. On 23 December Barfüsserplatz closes at 20:00 and Münsterplatz at 18:00. Adväntsgass follows the same date window. The Theaterplatz village is the only site planned to stay open through Christmas until 3 January 2027; a full hour-by-hour schedule and stall list were not yet on the canton’s official Christmas-market pages in early September 2026 – recheck basel.com and bs.ch before you travel.

Food stays Swiss and straightforward: red and white mulled wine, raclette, grilled sausage, waffles, Läckerli biscuits, Feuerzangenbowle and flame-cooked salmon over beech wood. Add Advent concerts, Palazzo Colombino, the City Run Basel on 21 November 2026, and the Town Hall and Minster trees. Walking time between squares is short. The logical circuit is Barfüsserplatz – Münsterplatz – Theaterplatz – Mittlere Brücke – Rheingasse/Claraplatz.

Barfüsserplatz Christmas Market in Basel – the main market

Barfüsserplatz is the heart of Basel’s 2026 Christmas market. Chalets around the Gothic Barfüsser Church (now the Historical Museum) sell decorations, gifts, candle-dipping and food. The mulled-wine pyramid is the meeting point; Hans-Rudolf Liechti serves Feuerzangenbowle from a copper kettle. In Barfüssergasse, Kulpa paints baubles with Basel motifs (Spalentor, Town Hall, trams). Official hours: 26 November to 23 December 2026, daily 11:00–20:30, 23 December until 20:00. Address: Barfüsserplatz, 4051 Basel. Tram stop: Barfüsserplatz. Organiser: Canton of Basel-Stadt.

Münsterplatz Christmas Market in Basel – Minster, Wanner tree, snow globes

Since 2011 Münsterplatz has been its own, calmer market in front of the red-sandstone Minster. Johann Wanner’s decorated tree and the glowing snow globes in the plane trees are the city’s postcard. Stalls under the trees sell crafts, food and drink; Hugo Levy grills flame salmon over an open fire. Official hours: 26 November to 23 December 2026, daily 11:00–20:30, 23 December until 18:00 only. Address: Münsterplatz, 4051 Basel, a few minutes uphill from Barfüsserplatz. St Martin’s tower (Mon–Fri 16:00–18:00, last entry 17:30, pairs or groups only, about 6 EUR) looks down on the lights. The Town Hall courtyard holds the public Wish Book.

Märliwald on Münsterplatz in Basel

The fairytale forest run by Robi-Spiel-Aktionen is a separate family zone on Münsterplatz, not the stall market itself. Dates 2026: 26 November to 22 December. Monday–Friday 13:30–19:00, Saturday–Sunday 11:00–19:00; the woodcutters’ bar daily 11:00–20:30. Pewter casting, candle dipping, gingerbread decorating, smithing and a Christmas puppet play. Info: robi-spiel-aktionen.ch.

Adväntsgass on Rheingasse – Kleinbasel, fondue, younger crowd

Adväntsgass is not a satellite of the cantonal market; it is Kleinbasel’s own Advent street. Location: Rheingasse, 4058 Basel. Official run: 26 November to 23 December 2026. Character: food first – fondue in a gondola, a fondue bus, a pop-up Alpine hut, mulled wine, around three dozen stalls (36 in the 2025 anniversary year). The mood is younger, louder and built for lingering. Walk there across the illuminated Mittlere Brücke. Site: advaentsgass.ch. The canton lists Adväntsgass as a complement to Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz.

Claraplatz Christmas Market in Basel

Claraplatz in Kleinbasel is the third cantonal site: mainly food and drink – cheese, meat, hot drinks – for sitting down after the bridge. It belongs to the official Basel Christmas market, not to Adväntsgass, but shares the same riverbank. Last-day hours often match Barfüsserplatz (2026 notices: 23 December until 20:00). Address: Claraplatz, 4058 Basel.

Christmas Village at Theaterplatz in Basel – new for 2026

New in 2026 is the Christmas village around Theaterplatz and Elisabethenkirche. The Presidential Department of Basel-Stadt announced it in May 2026 as an addition to Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz: a boutique market of local design, social projects and selected food, aimed at a younger, culture-minded crowd, meant as a winter hangout and as extra capacity for the 500,000–900,000 visits at the classic market. Planned dates: 26 November 2026 to 3 January 2027 – the only site scheduled through Christmas and New Year. Behind it: Katja Weber and Marc Blickenstorfer (formerly the Bellevue Christmas village in Zurich) and Jeanny Messerli (KaBar / Kaserne Basel). The permit process opened in late May 2026. As of early September 2026 the official cantonal and tourism Christmas-market pages still had no hour grid or stall list for the village – check Theaterplatz, bs.ch and basel.com before you go. Address: Theaterplatz / Theaterstrasse, 4051 Basel, between Barfüsserplatz and Elisabethenkirche.

Tickets & Admission for the Basel Christmas Market Basel

Entry to the Basel Christmas market, Adväntsgass and the planned Theaterplatz village is free. There is no day ticket. You pay only for food, drink, Märliwald activities and optional extras. The lit climb in the Minster’s St Martin’s tower costs about 6 EUR per person (Mon–Fri 16:00–18:00, last entry 17:30, minimum two people). 2026 mulled-wine, fondue and raclette prices had not been published across the board at the time of research; Swiss stalls usually sit above typical German prices, which is not the same as a confirmed 2026 figure. Pay on site in local currency or by card – euro amounts here are converted (about 1.06 EUR per Swiss franc in September 2026). Concerts, tours and Theater Basel (The Nutcracker in season) are booked separately. Stall lists: bs.ch (Basel Christmas market) and basel.com.

Visitor Tips: Travel & Accommodation in Basel

  • Getting there: Basel SBB is a 10–15 minute walk or one tram from Barfüsserplatz. From Germany use Basel Badischer Bahnhof, then tram. EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg plus bus into town. Walk the circuit: Barfüsserplatz – Münsterplatz (short climb) – Theaterplatz – Mittlere Brücke – Rheingasse/Claraplatz. A 24-hour TNW ticket or the Basel Card is worth it.
  • Weather and clothing: Advent in the Rhine valley often means rain, wind and near-freezing air, rarely postcard snow. Waterproof shoes for cobbles, layers, gloves. Münsterplatz is more exposed than the narrow Rheingasse.
  • Where to stay: Old town, riverside Kleinbasel and the station district sell out on Advent weekends – book early. Weil am Rhein or Lörrach can be cheaper with a tram or S-Bahn back. Tourist info: basel.com.
  • Order of visit: late morning or early afternoon for Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz (Märliwald, Wanner tree, daylight photos), dusk at Theaterplatz, dinner on Adväntsgass. On 23 December reach Münsterplatz before 18:00.
  • After Christmas: Barfüsserplatz, Münsterplatz and Adväntsgass are closed. Lights run until 3 January 2027 and, if licensed, so does the Theaterplatz village. Confirm holiday hours for the village separately.
