Welcome to the Borbecker Lichtwochen 2026 in Essen
The Borbecker Lichtwochen 2026 turn the centre of Essen-Borbeck into a festive neighbourhood of lights for Advent. Traditionally, the illuminations are switched on on the 1st Sunday of Advent – in 2026 on Sunday, 29 November – around 17:00 on Borbecker Platz. Organised by the Initiativkreis Centrum Borbeck e.V. (CeBo), stars, light wreaths and a large Christmas tree define the look of Borbeck’s pedestrian centre. The exact end date of the 2026 lighting period has not been published yet; in previous years the displays remained visible throughout Advent. Check cebo-borbeck.de for updates.

- A large Christmas tree as the festive focal point; in past years nursery children decorated it with handmade ornaments.

Program & Schedule: What to Expect in 2026
The main moment is the switch-on of the Borbecker Lichtwochen on 1st Advent 2026 (29 November) around 17:00 on Borbecker Platz. On the same day, the traditional Borbecker Christmas Market Day usually takes place – a one-day, deliberately non-commercial market with stands run by clubs, schools and social institutions. In past years the mayor or district representatives often opened the event; music, children’s activities and cocoa for families were part of the programme.
After the switch-on, the light elements stay on in the Borbeck centre through Advent and invite evening walks. A fixed end date for the 2026/27 displays has not been announced; the CeBo typically publishes details and any extra actions (more trees, new décor) in November. Unlike the city-centre Essener Lichtwochen (25 October 2026 to 2 January 2027), the Borbecker Lichtwochen are a district event focused on neighbourhood atmosphere and Advent spirit.
Tickets & Admission for Borbecker Lichtwochen Essen
Admission to the Borbecker Lichtwochen and the Christmas Market Day is free. There are no tickets and no entry fee. Food and drinks at the stands and purchases in local shops are paid separately. Buying baked goods or crafts often supports local social projects. Official information and last-minute programme changes are published on the CeBo website: cebo-borbeck.de.
Visitor Tips: Travel & Accommodation in Essen
- Getting there: Essen-Borbeck S-Bahn station (S9) is only a few minutes’ walk from the centre and Borbecker Platz. Tram lines 103 and 101 (stops Bahnhof Borbeck or Germaniaplatz) link the district to Essen city centre. By car via the A40 or A42; parking in the centre is limited – public transport is recommended.
- Weather and clothing: Late November and December in Essen are often damp and cold (around 0–8 °C). Wear warm layers, sturdy shoes and rain protection; the lights look best after dusk.
- Where to stay: Hotels and guesthouses in Essen-Borbeck, nearby Mülheim an der Ruhr and Essen city centre. Book early in Advent, especially if you combine the visit with the Essener Lichtwochen and the International Christmas Market downtown.
- Combine visits: On the same day or other Advent weekends, the Essener Lichtwochen in the city centre (until 2 January 2027) and smaller district markets are worth combining so you can see Christmas lighting in different parts of Essen.
- Latest info: The detailed programme for 29 November 2026 (market hours, Sunday opening, children’s activities) is usually released by CeBo and the Borbecker Bürger- und Verkehrsverein shortly before 1st Advent. Check cebo-borbeck.de and local pages such as borbeck.de before you go.
