Cannes Film Festival 2027 – The 80th Edition of the World's Most Prestigious Film Event

From 11 to 22 May 2027, the French Riviera once again becomes the centre of the international film world. The 80th edition of the Cannes Film Festival takes place at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès on the Boulevard de la Croisette. Over twelve days, the world's most celebrated filmmakers present their new works, a distinguished jury awards the coveted Palme d'Or, and hundreds of thousands of visitors experience one of the most glamorous cultural events on the planet.

Highlights

  • Palme d'Or Competition featuring the most significant new productions from international auteur filmmakers
  • Red Carpet Galas at the Grand Théâtre Lumière for all competition and out-of-competition screenings (from approximately 7:00 PM nightly)
  • Cinéma de la Plage: free open-air screenings for all visitors every evening from 9:30 PM at Plage Macé
  • Parallel sections: Un Certain Regard, Directors' Fortnight, Semaine de la Critique and ACID
  • Marché du Film (11 to 19 May 2027): the world's leading film market with over 16,000 professionals from 140 countries
  • Cannes Classics: restored films and documentaries celebrating cinema history
  • Honorary Palme d'Or ceremonies celebrating outstanding contributions to world cinema

Program

The festival opens on 11 May 2027 with the opening ceremony at the Grand Théâtre Lumière. Each day features multiple official screenings, including prestigious gala events in the evening (around 7:00 PM and 10:00 PM) during which filmmakers and actors walk the famous red carpet. Independent parallel sections enrich the program: the Directors' Fortnight (Quinzaine des Cinéastes) and the Semaine de la Critique spotlight debut features and emerging talents. The full official selection and program will be announced at a press conference in Paris in April 2027, as is tradition.

Tickets and Accreditation

The Cannes Film Festival is primarily reserved for film industry professionals and accredited press. However, several access options are available to the broader public:

  • Cinéma de la Plage: Free open-air screenings every evening at 9:30 PM on Plage Macé. No ticket required; admission is first come, first served.
  • Cinéphiles Accreditation: Open to film club members and cinema enthusiasts. Provides access to Official Selection screenings at selected cinemas around Cannes. Applications typically open in February 2027.
  • 3 Days in Cannes: A dedicated programme for cinema lovers aged 18 to 28, offering access to the Cinéum multiplex and selected Palais des Festivals screenings.
  • Professional Accreditation: Free for film industry professionals. Applications open via the official accreditation portal, typically from February to mid-March 2027. An environmental contribution of €20 per person applies.
  • Marché du Film Accreditation: For professionals attending the film market. Costs approximately €300 per person.

Public Access: What Everyone Can Experience

Even without accreditation, the festival atmosphere is unmissable. Thousands of visitors line the Boulevard de la Croisette daily to watch the red carpet arrivals from behind the barriers. The beach in front of the Palais des Festivals becomes a central meeting point. Each evening, Cinéma de la Plage at Plage Macé offers free open-air film screenings. In recent editions, over 18,000 seats have been filled via last-minute queues at the Cinéum alone.

Getting There and Accommodation

  • Nice Côte d'Azur Airport is just 27 km from Cannes with regular direct bus connections.

Visitor Tips

  • Gala screenings have a strict dress code for accredited attendees: evening gowns or tuxedos. Spectators watching the red carpet from behind barriers may wear any attire.

  • May weather in Cannes is pleasantly warm (around 20 to 24°C); light evening clothing is sufficient.
