Event Details

Welcome to the Torres Vedras Carnival 2027

The Torres Vedras Carnival is widely regarded as "the most Portuguese carnival in Portugal"; no other carnival in the country is so closely tied to local tradition, spontaneity and sharp political satire. This small city north of Lisbon transforms for about a week into the country's carnival capital; in 2023 the tradition was officially recognised as National Intangible Cultural Heritage. Important note: the 2026 edition had to be cancelled due to severe storm damage and landslides in the region and was instead replaced by a special spring event called "Uma Festa do Caraças"; an official program for 2027 has not yet been published. Carnival Tuesday falls on 9 February 2027; the dates given here (4 to 10 February) follow the traditional Thursday to Ash Wednesday pattern and will be updated once official dates are confirmed.

Highlights

  • Sharp political and social satire on the parade floats, the carnival's trademark
  • The "Matrafonas": men dressed up in exaggerated, comic female costumes
  • Giant head figures ("Cabeçudos") and the traditional drum groups "Zés Pereiras"
  • A King and Queen of Carnival, both traditionally played by men
  • The "Tó'Candar", a large float carrying a live band
  • Several night and day parades with illuminated floats
  • Burning of the "Entrudo" figure closing the festivities on Ash Wednesday

Program

The event traditionally follows a set pattern: from Thursday through Ash Wednesday, parades of floats, masked groups and marching bands move through the historic centre on several days and nights. Highlights usually include the big night parade on Saturday, the Sunday afternoon parade, and the "Matrafonas" costume contest on the night before Carnival Tuesday. The floats regularly comment on current political and social topics, both national and international. The carnival traditionally closes with the "Enterro do Entrudo" (burial of the carnival) on Ash Wednesday evening. The exact 2027 program is usually published only a few weeks before the event.

Tickets

Most street events and parades can be watched for free along the route. For reserved grandstand seating and unrestricted access on the main event days, organisers sell an official kit or a free access wristband ("Pulseira Livre Trânsito"), which cost around 16 euros in previous editions and covers four event days. Tickets already purchased for the 2026 edition remain valid for 2027, according to the organisers.

Visitor Tips

  • Costumes are welcome but not required; dressing as a "matrafona" is mandatory only for the costume contest.
  • Arrive early to secure a good spot along Avenida 5 de Outubro for the main parades.
  • Traveling by train from Lisbon (Torres Vedras station) is recommended, as parking in the centre is limited during carnival.
  • The political satire is often very direct; a basic understanding of current Portuguese politics helps make sense of the references.
  • Bring warm clothing for the evening events in February.
