Chania's official public countdown is held at the historic Clock Tower in the Municipal Garden rather than on the quayside itself. Around the same dates the Old Town stays festive: a Christmas park and family activities on 1866 Square, harbour illuminations near the Yali Tzamisi, and late dinners in tavernas. Tickets & Admission for New Year's Eve Chania
The municipality's Clock Tower celebration has been free to attend in recent official announcements; there is no city ticket for the midnight gathering. Visitor Tips: Travel & Accommodation in Chania
- Fly into Chania Airport (CHQ) or arrive by ferry at Souda, then continue by KTEL bus, taxi or rental car. Walking is the easiest way through the Old Town on New Year's Eve because parking is limited.
- December and January nights are often 10 to 16 degrees Celsius, with a real chance of rain. Wear layers, sturdy shoes and a waterproof jacket.
- Old Town and harbour hotels fill quickly around the turn of the year. Book early and keep written confirmation.
- Arrive before 22:00 if you want a close view of the stage and the Clock Tower Light Show. Ploumidaki Street gets crowded in the final hours.
- Keep fireworks viewing flexible: good sightlines are around the Municipal Garden and later toward the harbour and lighthouse. Recheck the municipality update on the day.
