Welcome to the Christkindlimärt Rapperswil-Jona 2026 in Rapperswil-Jona
Christkindlimärt Rapperswil-Jona is one of Switzerland’s largest and most photogenic Christmas markets: a medieval old town, Rapperswil Castle above Lake Zurich, the Seequai and the harbour. In 2026 it grows to 13 market days, run by OK Christkindlimärt / Rapperswil Zürichsee Tourismus. Entry is free. It is not a continuous market from 3 to 20 December. Monday to Wednesday are rest days – except the Grand Market, which now opens on Wednesday 9 December.
Three blocks: 3–6 December, small lakeside market (about 100 stalls on Seequai, Fischmarktplatz, Hafenmole, Curtiplatz); 9–13 December, Grand Market over five days with 200-plus stalls adding Marktgasse, Fischmarktstrasse, Rathausstrasse and Hauptplatz; 17–20 December, lakeside market again. Hours 2026: Wednesday 9 December 14:00–21:00; Thursdays and Fridays 14:00–21:00; Saturdays 11:00–21:00; Sundays 11:00–19:30. Closed 7, 8, 14, 15 and 16 December. Fischmarktplatz is a two-minute walk from Rapperswil station.

Program & Schedule: What to Expect in 2026
The market follows the lake. On the two “small” weekends it stays at the harbour and Fischmarktplatz – compact, romantic, strongest after dark when lights hit the water. In the middle week the Grand Market covers the old town up to Hauptplatz. If you can come once, pick 9–13 December. If you want atmosphere without the crush, pick 3–6 or 17–20 December. Sundays end at 19:30; weekdays often start only at 14:00 – plan an afternoon, not a morning (except Saturday and Sunday).
Food means mulled wine, stall snacks and the fondue chalet. In past years Hüttenzauber charged the equivalent of about 31 EUR for classic fondue (29.50 CHF) and about 13 EUR for raclette; confirm 2026 menus on site and reserve on weekends. Advent village by the lake: Seequai, Fischmarktplatz, Hafenmole
3–6 and 17–20 December 2026: about 100 vendors between Seequai, Fischmarktplatz, Hafenmole and Curtiplatz. This “small” market is the photogenic core – lake, harbour and castle in one view. Families stay by the carousel, couples at the railing, everyone at the Glühwein. Curtiplatz and the mole take overflow when Fischmarktplatz fills.
Grand Christkindlimärt through the old town of Rapperswil-Jona
9–13 December 2026, now five days including Wednesday: 200-plus stalls from the shore up Marktgasse via Fischmarktstrasse and Rathausstrasse to Hauptplatz. This is the shopping stretch – gifts, density, evening light in the lanes under the castle. Saturday 12 December will be the peak. With a stroller or wheelchair, stay closer to the lake; the streets climb.
Rapperswil Castle and the old town above the market
The castle sits on the hill directly above the stalls. The climb is worth it even if the museum is closed: lake, Seedamm and market lights. The old town is small enough to link market, castle and shore in two hours – or to stretch the evening in the hut. That historic core is why this market outranks many bigger cities on “most beautiful” lists.
Fondue hut Hüttenzauber on Fischmarktplatz
Hüttenzauber is a sit-down chalet, not just a snack window. Fondue, raclette, platters – and in past years later hours than the stalls. Weekend reservations are essential. Punch stays at the stalls; a table means the hut. 2026 prices are not pre-posted; expect restaurant, not snack-bar, money (paid in CHF on site, euro equivalents only as a guide).
Sternenmarkt St. Gallen – the nearby city market
St. Gallen is under an hour by train. Sternenmarkt runs 26 November to 24 December 2026 on Gallusplatz by the UNESCO Abbey District. Do Rapperswil on a peak weekend and Sternenstadt on a quieter weekday – two very different Eastern Swiss markets.
Zurich Christmas markets – the big neighbour
Zurich HB is the natural interchange. City markets (Wienachtsdorf at the main station, old town, Münsterhof depending on the year) need a separate 2026 check. Rapperswil is the better lake-and-castle option when Zurich feels too crowded or expensive – and it still sits in ZVV territory (S5, S7, S15).
More markets: Einsiedeln, Rüti, Pfäffikon SZ
SOB and the Voralpen-Express tie Einsiedeln Abbey, the Linth area and the upper lake to Rapperswil. Small neighbouring Advent markets change year to year; Christkindlimärt remains the regional main event. If you target 20 December (last Sunday), skip the car – Lido ice-rink parking is often held for SCRJ Lakers games.

Free entry, no market tickets. Pay for food, the fondue hut and gifts. Past Hüttenzauber prices were about 31 EUR-equivalent for classic fondue and 13 EUR-equivalent for raclette, drinks from about 4 EUR-equivalent – 2026 may shift; you pay in Swiss francs on site. Visitor Tips: Travel & Accommodation in Rapperswil-Jona
- Getting there: S-Bahn to Rapperswil SG, two minutes to Fischmarktplatz. S5, S7, S15 (ZVV) plus S4, S6, S17, S40 (SOB) and the Voralpen-Express. Drive only if you must: parking is limited and paid (Güterschuppen, SBB Süd, Grünfeld sports hall about 2 km, ARA/PARA for coaches). Do not drive on 20 December.
- Weather: The shore is windy and damp. Warm shoes, a windproof layer, a scarf. After dark the market is at its best – and coldest.
- Stay: Lock old-town and lake rooms early, especially 9–13 December. Fallback: Jona side, Pfäffikon SZ, or Zurich with an S-Bahn back.
- While you are there: Castle, Hurden wooden bridge, Knies Children’s Zoo (check if still open), lakeside promenade. The small market is an evening; the Grand Market is a full day.
- When to go: Saturday at 11:00 opening, or Thursday/Friday from 14:00 without weekend density. Sunday until 19:30 suits families. Book fondue before the harbour fills.
