Welcome to the Douro Harvest Festival 2026
Every September, the small town of Peso da Régua at the heart of the Douro Valley becomes the stage for one of Portugal's oldest wine festivals. Running since 1947 and organised together with the Institute of Douro and Port Wine, the festival marks the close of the grape harvest, while nearby, from Pinhão to the surrounding terraced vineyards, picking and celebrating happen side by side. The 2026 edition is expected to take place from 18 to 20 September; the municipality's detailed program is usually released only a few weeks in advance.

Program
At the heart of the festival is the communal treading of freshly picked grapes in granite lagares, accompanied by the songs of the vineyard workers, a ritual that has remained largely unchanged for generations. Alongside it, the major Douro wine houses offer tastings and masterclasses on Douro DOC and Port wine classifications. On the river, traditional rabelo boats, once used to carry Port wine from the vineyards down to Porto, compete in lively races. Comboios de Portugal (CP) runs a special historic train for the occasion, travelling from Porto Campanhã through Régua to Pinhão, one of the most scenic railway journeys in Europe. In the evening, live music and a gastronomy market featuring posta mirandesa and alheira keep the old town buzzing.
Tickets
Entry to the Douro Harvest Festival is free. Individual offerings such as guided vineyard visits, tasting passes or lagar experiences at nearby quintas (for example Quinta do Crasto or Quinta da Pacheca) are paid separately and booked directly with the estates, often weeks in advance.
Visitor Tips
- Book accommodation in Peso da Régua and Pinhão at least six to eight weeks ahead, as the region fills up quickly during harvest season.
- Traveling by train from Porto São Bento or Porto Campanhã is the most scenic and relaxed option (around two to two and a half hours).
- Daytime temperatures in the Douro Valley can still reach over 30 degrees Celsius in September; bring plenty of water and sun protection.
- Book lagar experiences at private quintas early, as spots are limited.
- Pack a light sweater for cooler evenings and the return journey.
