Welcome to the Orchideensonntagszug 2027 in Duren

The Orchideensonntagszug is the peak of Duren carnival on Sunday, 7 February 2027, a big costumed parade through the city centre. The Festkomitee Dürener Karneval calls it the Sunday procession before Rose Monday, lined in a typical year by around 30,000 spectators. Watching from the pavement is free. A separate start time for 2027 is not yet listed on the committee site; recent editions began at 14:00 and ran for about three hours.

Highlights & Attractions at Orchideensonntagszug in Duren

  • A major street parade of costumed carnival societies, marching groups and the prince’s wagon at the end
  • Brass bands and drummers carrying the procession for about three kilometres through the centre
  • Committee floats and decorated wagons throwing sweets and small gifts into the crowd
  • About 30,000 spectators in a typical year, according to the committee, which also promotes more than 2,500 participants, 45 groups, 10 bands and 26 committee floats

Program & Schedule: What to Expect in 2027

This is a street carnival, not a ticketed indoor show. Costumed groups, wagons and bands move through the centre, and the market square is one of the best places to watch them pass. Check duerenerkarneval.de shortly before the day for the clock time and any route change: the committee describes the Kreuzstraße loop for the 2025/2026 session and has not published a separate 2027 start time. In 2026 the parade lasted about three hours in near-freezing weather, with roughly 900 active participants, 23 wagons and twelve bands, below the larger figure used in the season promotion.

Other session dates sit around the parade. The city’s children’s carnival parade is on 31 January 2027. On Weiberfastnacht, 4 February 2027, “Jeck am Markt” opens on the market square at 11:11. The After-Zoch party at Dorint Hotel follows on the evening of 7 February. Those indoor parties are separate and partly ticketed; they are not the free street parade.

Tickets & Admission for Orchideensonntagszug Duren

There is no admission charge for the Orchideensonntagszug on the street. Standing on the route, catching sweets and joining the crowd is free. Food, drinks and souvenirs at stalls cost extra. Tickets apply only to separate parties, such as the After-Zoch party at Dorint Hotel Duren. The current programme is published by Festkomitee Dürener Karneval at duerenerkarneval.de.

Visitor Tips: Travel & Accommodation in Duren

  • Arrive early. The market, Oberstraße and Bismarckstraße were key stretches of the last published route, and parking along the parade is usually banned.
  • Early February in Duren is often cold and windy. Wear layers and sturdy shoes, and bring a bag for sweets rather than a costume with no coat.
  • Book a room in the centre or near the station early. Rose Monday in 2027 is 8 February, so the weekend is busy across the region.
  • Use train and bus into the centre and walk the last part. Stops can move when the parade closes streets.
  • Keep children near the front but clear of wheels and wagons. Do not step into the procession, and recheck the route the day before.
