Welcome to the Dürkheimer Wurstmarkt 2026
The Dürkheimer Wurstmarkt is officially recognised as the world's largest wine festival and transforms Bad Dürkheim every September into an enormous festival mile. In 2026, this centuries-old tradition takes place across two weekends: 11 to 15 September (first weekend) and 18 to 21 September (second weekend). With over 600,000 visitors, 36 traditional wine stands and around 300 wine specialities, the Wurstmarkt is one of Germany's most beloved folk festivals.
History & Tradition
The Wurstmarkt traces its origins back to 1417, making it one of Germany's oldest folk festivals. Originally held as a church market around the Michaeliskapelle on the Michelsberg hill, it gained its current name from the enormous quantities of sausage that visitors brought along. Despite its name, the festival is first and foremost a wine festival: all wines served are award-winning and sourced exclusively from local Palatinate vineyards.

Program & Opening Hours
The official opening takes place on Friday, 11 September 2026, from 6:00 PM. On all remaining festival days, wine stands open by 11:00 AM at the latest. Live music in the festival tent ends at midnight each evening; drinks service continues without music until 2:00 AM. Wednesday and Thursday serve as the so-called "Zwischenmarkt" (inter-market days): a reduced number of wine stands and food stalls are open from midday until 10:00 PM, while rides and the full program take a break.
The Schubkarchstände: Heart of the Festival
The 36 Schubkarchstände are the beating heart of the Dürkheimer Wurstmarkt. The name recalls the days when winegrowers would wheel their barrels onto the festival grounds by hand cart. Today, visitors sit shoulder to shoulder on narrow wooden benches at long communal tables, sharing Palatinate Schorle and award-winning wines in a uniquely convivial atmosphere. There is no better place on the festival grounds to connect with locals and fellow visitors.
Getting There & Parking
- Public transport is strongly recommended during the festival.
- Tram: Lines 4 or 9 to Bad Dürkheim train station forecourt; special timetables in operation during the festival.
- Train: Reinforced Deutsche Bahn connections from Karlsruhe, Mannheim, Kaiserslautern and Mainz; services run until 3:00 AM.
- Car: Around 3,700 parking spaces available; follow the parking guidance system. Fee approx. €6 at the Berufsschule car park.
Visitor Tips
- Entry is free; only food, drinks and rides carry a charge.
- Arrive early, especially on the opening day and weekends.
- To secure a seat in the popular Schubkarchstände on weekends, aim to arrive before noon.
- The fireworks on 15 and 21 September at 9:00 PM are visible from various points around the festival grounds, the Gradierbau and the B37 road.
- Book accommodation in Bad Dürkheim and the surrounding area well in advance; capacity fills up fast during festival weeks.
