From November 24 to December 22, 2026, the Marktplatz in the Luther town of Eisenach turns into a festively decorated winter wonderland. In the shadow of Wartburg Castle, the city combines two very different Christmas experiences, the classic market in the town center and the medieval Advent event high up at the castle.

Eisenach Christmas Market: The Main Market on Marktplatz
Around Marktplatz square, with its fountain, the baroque St George's Church and the town hall, about 50 wooden huts invite visitors to browse. A roughly 20 meter tall Christmas tree, a ferris wheel with views of Wartburg Castle and a lively stage program with Advent concerts define the market. 2026 dates: November 24 to December 22, free admission.
Historic Christmas Market at Wartburg Castle: Medieval Advent Above the City
In the courtyards of Wartburg Castle, the historic Christmas market, also known as Wartburg Advent, takes visitors into the world of medieval craftsmanship. Candle makers, glassblowers, lantern makers and traveling merchants show their skills on Advent weekends, accompanied by musicians and storytellers. 2026 dates: November 28 to 29, December 5 to 6, and December 12 to 13, each day from 10am to 7pm.

Program and Schedule: What to Expect in Eisenach
The Marktplatz Christmas market is typically open Monday through Thursday from 10:30am to 8:30pm, Friday and Saturday from 10:30am to 9:30pm, and Sunday from 11:30am to 8:30pm. It traditionally opens with a festive ceremony led by Santa Claus. The historic market at Wartburg Castle, by contrast, runs only on the three Advent weekends, making it a shorter but especially atmospheric addition.

Admission to the Marktplatz Christmas market is free, with only food, drinks and the ferris wheel charged at usual market prices. The historic market at Wartburg Castle, on the other hand, requires a toll style entrance fee that also covers access to the courtyards, the great hall and Luther's study; tickets can be bought online in advance or on site.
