The Sorteo Extraordinario de Navidad, known worldwide as El Gordo, takes place on 22 December 2026 at the Teatro Real in Madrid. It is the largest lottery in the world by total prize payout. The event is broadcast live on television and followed by millions across Spain.

Program & Schedule: What to Expect in 2026
The draw begins promptly at 9:00 AM and usually lasts until midday. Two golden drums spin: one containing 100,000 numbered balls and the other holding the prize balls. The children of San Ildefonso alternately announce numbers and prizes in their distinctive chant. The event is a national ritual that brings Spain to a standstill.
Tickets & Admission for El Gordo Madrid
Attendance at the draw in the Teatro Real is completely free. Seats are allocated strictly on a first-come, first-served basis; no reservations are possible. To participate in the lottery itself, a décimo costs €20 and can be purchased at official lottery outlets or via the Loterías y Apuestas del Estado website. Sales normally close on the evening of 21 December.
