Welcome to the Essen Light Festival 2026 in Essen
From October 2 to 11, 2026, the city centre of Essen once again turns into a stage for international light art. Over ten evenings, visitors can follow a compact route past light shows, video mappings and installations that bathe the Ruhr metropolis' landmark squares and buildings in warm light.

Program and Schedule: What to Expect in Essen
The walking route starts each evening at dusk, usually around 19:00 in October. Along a manageable stretch through the city centre, light installations, projections and interactive stations follow one another. Visitors who want to avoid crowds will find weekdays noticeably quieter than weekends. As part of IMAGINE PEACE, a project co funded by the European Union, Essen also presents works also shown in Brixen, Copenhagen, Oslo and Pula, addressing themes of peace and cohesion across Europe.
Tickets and Admission for the Essen Light Festival 2026
Visiting the Essen Light Festival is completely free, no ticket is required. Food and drinks at the cafés and restaurants along the route are offered at their usual prices. Guided tours, if offered, may come at an additional cost.
Visitor Tips: Travel and Accommodation in Essen
- Essen Hauptbahnhof is only a short walk from the city centre route, making arrival by train a good option
- The local light rail lines U11, U17 and U18 also stop close to the festival stations
- Warm clothing is recommended, since October evenings can already be quite cool
- Anyone wanting a quieter experience for photography should plan a visit on a weekday rather than the weekend
- Accommodation in Essen should be booked early for the festival period
