Welcome to the Essen Light Weeks 2026/2027 in Essen

From 25 October 2026 to 2 January 2027, Essen city centre shines for the 77th time during the Essen Light Weeks (Essener Lichtwochen). Streets, squares and façades around Kettwiger Straße and Kennedyplatz are dressed in light arches, seasonal motifs and festive installations. Admission is free. The traditional opening on the last Sunday in October marks the start of the pre-Christmas season in Essen.

Highlights & Attractions at Essen Light Weeks in Essen

  • 77th edition of one of North Rhine-Westphalia’s longest-running light festivals – free and right in the city centre.
  • Festive illuminations along Kettwiger Straße, on Kennedyplatz and on other downtown squares.
  • The well-known crown of light (Lichtkrone) over Kennedyplatz and Christmas-themed displays that turn the streets into a sea of lights.
  • The roughly 45-metre illuminated Ferris wheel (Lichtrad) with views over the lit-up centre – especially photogenic after dark.
  • Opening day on 25 October 2026 with Sunday shopping, street performers, an official procession and a music-synchronised firework display from Kennedyplatz.
  • From mid-November the lights frame the International Christmas Market Essen (13 November to 23 December 2026).
  • Food and drink stalls with savoury and sweet options plus hot drinks – ideal for an evening stroll through the illuminated streets.

Program & Schedule: What to Expect in 2026/2027

The Essen Light Weeks run continuously from 25 October 2026 to 2 January 2027. On opening day (25 October), city-centre shops open for Sunday shopping from 13:00 to 18:00, with street acts, face painting and a magician. At 18:00, First Mayor Julia Jacob opens the Light Weeks in front of the Marktkirche; a procession with the Schönebeck Youth Wind Orchestra then moves through the illuminated centre. At 19:00 the traditional music-synchronised fireworks begin from Kennedyplatz.

The illuminated Ferris wheel and accompanying food stands are typically open Sunday to Thursday from 12:00 to 20:00 and Friday and Saturday until 21:00. Closed days include 22 November 2026 (Totensonntag), 24–26 December 2026, 31 December 2026 and 1 January 2027. From 13 November 2026 the lights combine with the International Christmas Market in the same streets – perfect for a single evening route of illuminations, stalls and photo stops.

Visitor Tips: Travel & Accommodation in Essen

  • Getting there: Essen Hauptbahnhof is only a few minutes’ walk from Kettwiger Straße and Kennedyplatz. Buses and the U-Bahn serve the centre well; car parks such as Centralgarage Kennedyplatz are central but can fill quickly in the pre-Christmas period.
  • Best time for photos: After dark, when the light arches, crown of light and Ferris wheel are at their strongest. Opening day and weekends draw larger crowds – arriving a little earlier helps.
  • Weather and clothing: October to January in Essen is often cool, windy and wet. Warm layers, sturdy shoes and rain protection are advisable; the centre is largely walkable and accessible.
  • Combine your visit: From 13 November 2026, add the International Christmas Market (until 23 December) on the same streets and squares for a full evening of lights and market atmosphere.
  • Orientation: Tourist Info Essen at Kettwiger Straße 35, 45127 Essen, provides maps, hotel tips and up-to-date opening times for the Ferris wheel and market.
