From 24 November to 22 December 2026, the historic town of Esslingen am Neckar turns back the clock by 600 years with one of Germany's most celebrated Christmas and medieval markets. Set against the backdrop of the town's extraordinary half-timbered old town, with over 800 listed historical monuments, the event covers the Marktplatz, Rathausplatz, Hafenmarkt and Ritterstraße with around 180 stalls and more than 500 cultural programme highlights spread across four weeks. Ranked by the British newspaper The Times among the most beautiful Christmas markets in Europe, the market welcomes around one million visitors annually and admission is entirely free of charge.

- Christmas Island and children's programme: Around the Postmichelbrunnen fountain, families find a living nativity scene, a letter box for children to write to the Christkind, and workshops for younger visitors.

The market opens on Tuesday, 24 November 2026, from 16:00 with the official inauguration ceremony by the mayor on the Rathausplatz stage. From the following day, regular opening hours apply: Sunday to Thursday from 11:00 to 20:30, Friday and Saturday from 11:00 to 21:30. On weekends leading up to Christmas, over 30 additional craftspeople present their work on the Ritterstraße craft market. The daily cultural programme across four stages covers medieval music ensembles, fire and stilt performers, choral concerts and theatrical acts. Bookable workshops in medieval costume-making, juggling, incense crafting, medieval language and historical dance run throughout the market period, making this event as participatory as it is atmospheric.

- Travel by train: Esslingen am Neckar is directly connected to Stuttgart via the S1 S-Bahn line, with frequent departures. As the entire old town is closed to through traffic during the market period, the train is by far the most practical option for getting there.
- Parking and park-and-ride: For those arriving by car, park-and-ride facilities on the edge of the city centre are available. Multi-storey car parks near the main station offer the closest walking access to the market area.
- Plan multiple visits: The market runs for four full weeks, and one visit is rarely enough to cover all areas from the Marktplatz to the Hafenmarkt and Ritterstraße in full. Weekday visits are noticeably quieter than weekends.
- Dress for the outdoors: The entire market takes place on cobblestones and open squares. Warm, layered winter clothing and comfortable, sturdy footwear are strongly recommended, especially for evening visits.
