Welcome to the Feira Medieval Ibérica de Avis
Every year, the small town of Avis in Alto Alentejo, approximately two hours east of Lisbon, transforms into a vivid stage for the Middle Ages. The Feira Medieval Ibérica de Avis is considered one of the most complete medieval fairs in the region and invites visitors on a journey back to the 15th and 16th centuries, the era of the Avis Dynasty and the Military Order of São Bento de Avis. The fair takes place across the narrow streets and squares of the historic town centre, with free admission for all visitors.
History & Background
The House of Avis was one of the most influential royal dynasties in Portuguese history. King D. João I, Master of Avis, took the throne in 1385 following a dynastic crisis and launched an era of exploration and national glory. The Feira Medieval Ibérica de Avis reconstructs precisely this period, combining historical accuracy with an immersive experience for all ages. The fair has been held for over 20 years and draws visitors from across Portugal and neighbouring Spain.

Program
The fair opens on Friday evening at 7:00 PM with the ceremonial launch of the "Jornal da Ordem de Avis – Notícias Medievais" and a cortège in honour of the Commander of Benavila, followed by fire theatre, workshops and evening entertainment.
Saturday focuses on diplomacy and power: historical recreations of royal marriages, political alliances and the story of D. Leonor de Portugal take centre stage. Daytime features jousting tournaments, arruadas (street parades) and dance performances.
On Sunday, visitors experience the most dramatic chapters of Portuguese history: court intrigue, throne disputes and political power struggles. The day also includes a showcooking session by chef Fábio Bernardino and an academic lecture by historian Prof. Maria Helena Cruz Coelho on the Avis Dynasty.
Admission & Tickets
The Feira Medieval Ibérica de Avis is free and open to all visitors without prior registration. Costs may apply for food, drinks and certain workshops on site. Up-to-date programme information is published on the official Facebook page of the event.
Visitor Tips
- Avis is located approximately 2 hours east of Lisbon, near Portalegre in Alto Alentejo; car travel is recommended.
- The fair takes place outdoors on cobblestone streets; comfortable shoes are essential.
- May temperatures in Alentejo are warm during the day (around 22–28 °C) but can cool in the evenings.
- Book accommodation in Avis or nearby towns (Ponte de Sor, Portalegre) well in advance.
- Visitors in medieval costume are warmly welcomed and add to the atmosphere.
- Do not miss the local Alentejo cuisine: black pork, lamb and regional wines are signature flavours of the experience.
