Welcome to the Festa das Cruzes in Barcelos
From 29 April to 3 May 2027, the northern Portuguese town of Barcelos, located north of Porto, celebrates its famous Festa das Cruzes. Considered the first great romaria (religious pilgrimage festival) of the Minho region, it blends color, tradition and deep religious devotion. Its origins trace back to the 16th century, when, according to legend, a black cross appeared on the market ground in 1504; this gave rise to the veneration of the "Senhor da Cruz" and the construction of the Templo do Senhor Bom Jesus da Cruz, today the epicenter of the celebration.

Program
The festivities begin a few days before the climax with the installation of the Arcos de Romaria around Campo da Feira. In the following days, music concerts, folk parades and nightly fireworks shape the town's atmosphere. On the eve of 3 May, the intricate flower petal carpets are laid out in front of the Templo do Senhor Bom Jesus da Cruz, a sight that draws thousands of visitors every year. The celebration peaks on 3 May, Barcelos's municipal holiday: in the afternoon, the solemn Procissão da Invenção da Santa Cruz procession moves through town, bringing together the crosses of all 89 parishes in the county. Each festival day traditionally closes with fireworks around midnight.
Tickets
The Festa das Cruzes is a free public celebration; no ticket is needed for the street parades, concerts, flower carpets or the grand procession. Only individual commercial offerings, such as food stalls or special seating at certain concerts, may carry a cost.
