Welcome to the Festa di San Gennaro in Naples 2026
On Saturday, 19 September 2026, Naples celebrates its patron saint San Gennaro (Saint Januarius) with one of Italy's most extraordinary religious events. Thousands of faithful and visitors from around the world gather in the historic city centre around the Duomo di Napoli to witness the legendary blood miracle: the liquefaction of the martyr's dried blood, preserved for centuries in two sealed glass vials inside the cathedral.

The Blood Miracle – History and Meaning
San Gennaro was Bishop of Benevento and was martyred by decapitation on 19 September 305 AD in Pozzuoli. His blood has since been kept in two sealed glass vials inside the Duomo di Napoli. During the annual ceremony, the Cardinal carries the reliquary in a solemn procession to the high altar. If the congealed blood liquefies, it is considered a sign of protection and blessing for Naples. If the miracle does not occur or is delayed, it is traditionally seen as a bad omen. The ritual was officially established by Pope Sixtus V in 1586 and continues to captivate believers and visitors alike.
Program
Celebrations begin on the evening of 18 September: at 5:15 PM a brief liturgy takes place at the church of San Giorgio a Forcella, followed by a solemn procession with the Carabinieri band through the Old Town. At 6:30 PM, the first Vespers are celebrated inside the Duomo under the Archbishop's guidance. On 19 September itself, the main celebrations begin in the morning inside the cathedral. Throughout the day, the alleyways of the Centro Storico fill with concerts, street markets and folk events. The Museo del Tesoro di San Gennaro is open daily from 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM.
Tickets & Admission
Entry to the Duomo di Napoli and participation in the main religious ceremony and processions is free of charge. As places inside the cathedral are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis and fill up many hours in advance, arriving very early is strongly recommended. Admission to the Museo del Tesoro di San Gennaro costs €13 (full price); reduced rate €9.50 for seniors over 65 and disability companions. Children under 12 enter free. A separate timed-entry ticket is required for the Cappella di San Gennaro; Naples residents and under-18s enter free.
Visitor Tips
- Arrive very early as the cathedral fills up many hours before the ceremony begins.
- Use Metro Line 1 (Duomo stop) or Line 2 (Cavour stop) to reach the cathedral.
- Dress code is strictly enforced: shoulders and knees must be covered to enter the cathedral.
- Book Museo del Tesoro tickets online in advance to avoid queues.
- Be vigilant against pickpockets in heavily crowded areas and keep valuables secure.
- Book accommodation near the Centro Storico several months in advance.
