Welcome to the Festa di Santa Lucia 2026 in Syracuse
From November 30 to December 20, 2026, the old town of Syracuse on the island of Ortigia becomes the setting for Sicily's largest religious celebration. At its heart is Saint Lucy, patron saint of the city, whose statue and relics are carried through the streets in a solemn procession. The celebrations peak on December 13, the anniversary of the saint's martyrdom.

Program and Schedule: What Happens in Syracuse
The preparation period, known as the tredicina, begins in late November. On December 9 the niche holding the silver statue is opened inside the cathedral, and on December 12 the statue is solemnly moved to the main altar. On December 13, a pontifical Mass takes place in the morning, followed in the afternoon by the main procession through Ortigia to the Basilica of Santa Lucia al Sepolcro. On December 20 a further procession brings the statue back to the cathedral, where it is once again placed inside its niche.

The celebrations are entirely free and open to everyone. The processions take place on public squares and streets, especially around Piazza Duomo in Ortigia. Arriving early for the ceremonies inside the cathedral is recommended, since it fills up quickly during the central dates.
