Welcome to the Feast of San Ranieri 2026 in Pisa

On 16 and 17 June 2026, Pisa becomes one of Italy's most magical settings. The Festa di San Ranieri, honouring the city's patron saint, spans two unforgettable days: the candlelit spectacle of the Luminara di San Ranieri on the evening of 16 June, and the historic rowing regatta on the Arno on 17 June. Both events are part of Giugno Pisano, Pisa's traditional June festival, and are entirely free and open to the public.

16 June: Luminara di San Ranieri

On the evening of 16 June, approximately 70,000 candles in white glass holders illuminate the facades of palaces, churches, bridges and towers along the Lungarni, the historic embankments of the Arno River. During the afternoon, specially selected workers begin lighting the lumini, small candles set into handcrafted wooden frames called biancherie fixed to the building facades. As darkness falls, the city's electric lighting is switched off and the candles bathe Pisa in a golden glow reflected in the surface of the Arno below. Around 11:00 PM, the evening reaches its climax with a spectacular fireworks display launched from floating platforms on the river, lasting approximately 25 to 30 minutes. The tradition dates back at least to 1688 and is considered the oldest continuously observed light festival in Italy.

17 June: Palio di San Ranieri

On the feast day itself, the Palio di San Ranieri begins at 7:00 PM, a historic rowing regatta on the Arno. Four teams representing Pisa's historic districts compete: San Francesco (yellow), San Martino (red), Santa Maria (light blue) and Sant'Antonio (green). The boats row 1,500 metres upstream from Ponte della Cittadella to Scalo dei Renaioli. Victory goes not to the fastest crew, but to the district whose montatore first climbs a 10-metre floating mast and seizes the victory banner. Throughout the day, the Fiera di San Ranieri street market fills Piazza dei Cavalieri and Via Santa Maria, and free guided tours are offered on Piazza del Duomo.
