Welcome to the Festival of the Celtic World in Ortigueira
Every summer, the small fishing town of Ortigueira in northern Galicia becomes the world capital of Celtic music. The Festival Internacional do Mundo Celta de Ortigueira is one of the largest and most important free folk festivals in Europe. Founded in 1978 by the Escola de Gaitas de Ortigueira, it has grown into a global meeting point for musicians and fans from the Celtic nations: Galicia, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Brittany, Asturias and beyond.
The festival traditionally takes place from Thursday to Sunday of the second full week of July. For 2027, this is expected to fall on 8 to 11 July 2027. Official dates for 2027 will be confirmed by the organizers shortly after the 2026 edition closes. The event holds the distinction of Fiesta de Interés Turístico Internacional and regularly attracts more than 100,000 visitors over its four days.

Programme & Stages
The heart of the festival is the main stage Escenario Estrella Galicia at the harbour, where the biggest names in international folk and Celtic music perform each evening from around 5:00 PM. The 2026 edition featured artists such as Milladoiro, Lúnasa, Solas, Flook, Yves Lambert, Valtos, Anxo Lorenzo and Runas winner Xara. For 2027, the Runas 2026 winner Aérokorda from Belgium has already been officially confirmed to perform.
Alongside the main stage, the Vila Celta runs a daytime programme of workshops, courses and smaller concerts. The Festival na Rúa series brings music to the streets and squares of Ortigueira, creating a Celtic atmosphere throughout the entire old town.
Admission & Tickets
The Festival Internacional do Mundo Celta de Ortigueira is completely free of charge and requires no ticket. There are no admission fees for any of the concerts, parades or activities. This makes Ortigueira one of the very few international music festivals of this scale with no entry costs whatsoever.
Camping & Accommodation
A key feature of the festival experience is the free campsite on the Morouzos peninsula, next to the beach of the same name, within walking distance of the harbour stage. The site offers basic facilities with sanitary infrastructure. The town council provides a free shuttle bus between car parks and the campsite. Those preferring fixed accommodation should book hotels or holiday apartments as far in advance as possible, as capacity in the region is very limited during festival week.
Getting There
Ortigueira is located in the far northwest of Galicia, around 100 kilometres northeast of A Coruña. The nearest airports are Santiago de Compostela (SCQ) and A Coruña (LCG). During the festival, special bus services run from A Coruña, Ferrol and Lugo. Arriving by car is possible, but parking in Ortigueira itself is very limited during festival week; designated car parks with shuttle connections are available on the outskirts.
Visitor Tips
- Arrive early: the best spots in front of the main stage fill up fast.
- Pack warm layers for the evenings; Atlantic nights can be cool even in July.
- Bring a rain poncho or waterproof jacket; Galicia is known for changeable weather.
- Organise accommodation or camping gear well in advance.
- Bring cash; not all food stalls and vendors accept card payment.
- The festival pairs perfectly with a wider Galicia trip: Santiago de Compostela, the Rías Altas and Cape Ortegal are all nearby.
