Program and Schedule: What to Expect in 2027
The grounds usually open at around 6 pm and stay open until about 1 am. The opening evening traditionally features a reenactment of the old sardine unloading ritual, followed by a parade with a brass band along the riverfront. Several stages then take over along the river, with the main act performing at around 10 pm each night. Exact 2027 dates and the artist lineup have not yet been announced and will be published on the official website closer to summer.
Tickets and Admission for the Festival da Sardinha
Entry to the festival grounds is traditionally free of charge. Visitors only pay on site for food and drink, such as the classic plate of five grilled sardines with bread, boiled potatoes and Algarve salad, which has cost around 12.50 euros in recent editions. The opening evening also often includes thousands of free tasting vouchers for sardines on bread with a drink.
Visitor Tips: Travel and Accommodation in Portimão
- The festival grounds are within walking distance of the city centre, making it easy to arrive on foot or by bicycle
- Parking near the centre fills up quickly on festival nights, and the train station is also close by
- Evenings by the river can turn cool, so a light jacket is worth packing despite the summer heat
- Accommodation in Portimão and nearby Praia da Rocha should be booked well ahead of the festival week
- For a good view of the concerts, arrive at the main stage a little before 10 pm
