Festival dei Due Mondi 2026 – The Festival of Two Worlds in Spoleto
From 26 June to 12 July 2026, the medieval hilltop town of Spoleto in Umbria becomes a living stage for the 69th edition of the Festival dei Due Mondi. Under the theme "Radici" (Roots) and for the first time under the artistic direction of Daniele Cipriani, the festival presents over 100 events, 7 world premieres, 9 original productions and more than 1,000 artists from 27 countries. It is one of the most important cultural festivals in Europe.
History and Significance
The Festival dei Due Mondi was founded in 1958 by the Italian-American composer Gian Carlo Menotti with a simple but visionary idea: to bring European and American cultures together in a single place. Over nearly seven decades, the festival has grown into one of the world's most prestigious performing arts events, combining opera, dance, theatre, classical music and visual arts in a unique setting. Each year it draws up to 80,000 visitors to the hills of Umbria.
Program 2026
The 69th edition opens on 26 June 2026 at 6:30 PM with Samuel Barber's opera "Vanessa" at the Teatro Nuovo Gian Carlo Menotti. The libretto was written by festival founder Menotti himself, and the production is co-produced with the Fondazione Teatro Comunale di Bologna. Conductor Sora Elisabeth Lee leads the Orchestra del Teatro Comunale di Bologna with a cast including Lauren Fagan and Rod Gilfry. Key programme highlights include:
- 30 June: MIKA Symphonique at Piazza del Duomo
- 3 July: Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts the London Symphony Orchestra with pianist Beatrice Rana (Rachmaninov programme)
- 9 July: Concert by Arisa
- 12 July: Closing concert with Gianandrea Noseda and the Filarmonica del Teatro Regio di Torino (Bernstein, Dvořák, Menotti)
- La MaMa Spoleto Open: contemporary dance and international theatre from 28 June to 11 July at Cantiere Oberdan
- Festival dei Due Mondi Academy: free masterclasses for 20 musicians under 35 (29 June to 12 July)
Venues
The festival uses Spoleto as a whole stage. The key venues are Piazza del Duomo for large open-air concerts, the Teatro Nuovo Gian Carlo Menotti for opera and theatre, Palazzo Collicola for visual arts, and the Teatro Romano for special performances. Smaller chamber concerts take place in historic churches of the surrounding Valnerina valley.

Getting There and Accommodation
Spoleto is most easily reached by train: from Rome Termini, the journey on the Rome–Ancona line takes around 80 minutes. Visitors travelling by rental car can reach Spoleto via the A1 motorway from Rome or Florence. As hotels fill up quickly during the festival, booking accommodation well in advance is strongly recommended.
Visitor Tips
- Smart casual attire is appropriate for evening theatre performances; comfortable shoes are essential on Spoleto's cobbled streets.
- Bring a light layer for open-air concerts at Piazza del Duomo, as summer evenings can be cool in the Umbrian hills.
- Book tickets for popular events as early as possible; the opening opera in particular sells out quickly.
- If attending multiple events, the Carnet or Festival Easy Card offers significant savings.
- Spoleto is also an ideal base for exploring Umbria: Assisi, Perugia and Orvieto are all within easy reach by car or regional train.
