Welcome to the Fête des Lumières Lyon 2026
From 5 to 8 December 2026, Lyon transforms into the world's largest festival of light. Over four magical nights, the entire city centre becomes an open-air gallery of light installations, video projections and sound art, created by artists from around the globe. The Fête des Lumières draws between two and three million visitors each year and is entirely free and open to all.
History & Tradition
The festival's roots trace back to 1643, when the people of Lyon made a vow to honour the Virgin Mary for sparing the city from the plague. On 8 December 1852, residents spontaneously lit candles on their windowsills to mark the feast of the Immaculate Conception. This tradition evolved into an international cultural festival from 1999 onwards, now recognised as a global benchmark for ephemeral light art. 8 December remains the traditional and festive closing night of the event.

Venues & Route
The festival spreads across Lyon's entire city centre. Key locations include the Place des Terreaux hosting the most spectacular installation projected onto the Hôtel de Ville facade, Place Bellecour, the Vieux-Lyon historic district, Basilique Fourvière, Parc de la Tête d'Or, and the illuminated riverbanks of the Rhône and Saône. From 6:00 PM each evening, the Presqu'île peninsula becomes pedestrianised; all vehicles, bicycles and e-scooters are prohibited within the festival perimeter.
Opening Hours & Admission
Installations light up each evening at nightfall, from approximately 7:00 to 8:00 PM, and remain illuminated until 11:00 PM (Sunday 8 December until approximately 10:00 PM). Admission is entirely free of charge. The official programme with a detailed interactive map is traditionally published in October 2026 on the festival's official website.
Visitor Tips
- Arrive by public transport; use Park and Ride facilities at the city's periphery.
- Vehicles, motorbikes, bicycles and e-scooters are prohibited within the festival zone.
- Book accommodation in the city centre early; hotels fill up quickly from August onwards.
- Avoid peak hours between 8:00 PM and 10:00 PM by starting your route earlier in the evening.
- Dress warmly; December in Lyon is cold and often damp.
- The official website publishes an interactive installation map in October — check it before your visit.
- Book guided tours through the Office de Tourisme de Lyon in advance.
