Event Details

Welcome to the Foire aux Truffes in Sarlat la Canéda

Every winter, the medieval old town of Sarlat la Canéda in the Périgord Noir becomes one of the most important hubs for black Périgord truffles. From December through January, continuing into March, truffle growers and buyers gather around Rue Fénelon and the square in front of the town hall to trade the prized Tuber melanosporum.

Highlights and Attractions at the Sarlat Truffle Market

  • A wholesale market overseen by the Société Nationale des Marchés, one of the few officially recognized truffle markets in the region
  • Freshly brushed and inspected Périgord truffles sold directly by local growers
  • A smaller retail market where visitors can buy truffles themselves
  • The atmospheric backdrop of Sarlat's beautifully preserved old town with its sandstone facades
  • Nearby foie gras and wine stalls that accompany the truffle season
  • The related Fête de la Truffe in January, featuring truffle dog demonstrations and tastings

Program and Schedule: What Happens and When in Sarlat

The retail truffle market traditionally takes place on Saturday mornings from 9am on Rue Fénelon, while the wholesale market runs on Wednesday afternoons under the arcades of the town hall on Place de la Liberté. The season usually opens in early December and continues until mid March, with December and January among the busiest weeks. In addition, the Fête de la Truffe usually takes place on the third weekend of January, a dedicated weekend with truffle dog demonstrations, tastings and culinary workshops in the town center.

Prices and Taking Part in the Market

Access to the market itself is free, this is not a ticketed event. Truffle prices follow the daily market rate and can vary considerably depending on supply and quality, so there is no fixed price list. Anyone joining accompanying activities such as wine tastings during the Fête de la Truffe usually pays a separate fee on site.

Visitor Tips: Travel and Accommodation in Sarlat
