Welcome to the Corpus Christi Procession in Hallstatt 2027

On Thursday, 27 May 2027, Lake Hallstatt turns into a floating stage for one of Austria's most striking traditions. Unlike most Corpus Christi celebrations, the Hallstatt procession does not move through the streets but takes place entirely on the water; a custom first documented in 1623 and held as a permanent endowment of the Hallstatt salt mine since 1628. In the UNESCO World Heritage village of Hallstatt Dachstein Salzkammergut, this holiday is also a vivid celebration of flowers: the market square is festively decorated, and the traditional boats, known as "Fuhren", are adorned with abundant flowers and green branches.

Highlights

  • World famous lake procession on Lake Hallstatt
  • Flower decorated market square in the heart of the World Heritage village
  • Traditional flower covered boats ("Fuhren")
  • Salutes fired by the Hallstatt Prangerschützen, echoing off the rock faces
  • Solemn High Mass in the Catholic parish church
  • Four blessing stations held directly on the lake
  • Centuries old tradition dating back to 1623

Program

Starting as early as 6:00 AM, the Hallstatt Prangerschützen begin firing salutes from the edge of the village, accompanying the approaching boats across the lake every 15 minutes. At 9:00 AM, a solemn High Mass takes place in the Catholic parish church. Weather permitting, the procession then moves to the festively decorated market square, from where the "Himmelsfuhre" departs for the actual lake procession. Amid hymns and prayers, four blessing stations are celebrated on Lake Hallstatt, accompanied by brass band music and the majestic sight of the colorful boat procession against the backdrop of the salt mountain. Other Salzkammergut villages, such as Traunkirchen on Lake Traun, have celebrated Corpus Christi as a lake procession in similar form since the 17th century.

Tickets

Attending the Corpus Christi procession is free of charge; no ticket is required. Visitors who want to experience the event up close can book a seat on one of the sightseeing boats operated by the Hallstatt Seeschifffahrt, which accompany the procession on the water from around 9:30 AM; early reservation is recommended.

Visitor Tips

  • Arrive early, as Hallstatt gets very crowded on this holiday and parking is limited.
  • For a good view of the boats, look for a spot along the lakeshore near the market square.
  • In bad weather, the program may be adjusted or shortened.
  • Traveling by train and bus is strongly recommended due to limited parking.
  • Since Traunkirchen is also in the Salzkammergut, its lake procession on the same day is worth combining with a visit.
