On New Year's Eve, Funchal's amphitheater shaped bay on the island of Madeira becomes the stage for one of the largest fireworks displays in the world. From the surrounding hillsides down to the harbour, dozens of launch stations fire in unison as the city builds toward midnight with concerts and a spectacular countdown. On December 31, 2026, the final countdown show begins at 23:40, with the fireworks themselves starting at midnight and lasting until roughly 00:15 on January 1, 2027.

Program & Schedule: What to Expect on New Year's Eve in Funchal
From late evening, the Avenida do Mar promenade fills with locals and visitors, many dressed for a festive night out. From 23:40, an audiovisual countdown show takes place at the pier, before the roughly eight minute fireworks display lights up the entire bay at midnight. Full details of the on stage programme and performers for 2026/2027 have not yet been fully published; the fireworks format itself, however, follows the established structure of previous years.

The fireworks display and access to the promenade and public viewpoints are completely free. For a more privileged view from the water, visitors can optionally book a fireworks boat tour; these tours are paid extras and sit outside the city's official free programme.
