Welcome to the Great River Race 2026 in London
On Saturday, September 12, 2026, the River Thames once again becomes the stage for London's River Marathon. Around 270 boats will race 21.6 miles from Millwall in the east to Ham in Richmond, passing beneath all 28 of London's famous bridges.

Program and Schedule: What to Expect in London
The first boats leave Millwall Riverside at around 12:45pm, with the exact start time depending on the Thames tide. The fastest crews reach Ham in just over two hours, while the last boats can take up to four hours, giving spectators an entire afternoon of racing to enjoy. At the finish near Ham House, arriving crews are met with a small celebration featuring food stalls, a bar and live music.
Viewing Points and Admission for the Great River Race
Watching the race is completely free along the whole route and from every bridge. Popular viewing spots include Tower Bridge, Westminster Bridge, Putney Bridge and Hammersmith Bridge. For those who want a closer look, a paid spectator boat also runs alongside the race on the Thames.
Visitor Tips: Travel and Viewing Points in London
- Underground and DLR stations along the Thames, such as Canary Wharf, Westminster or Putney Bridge, give easy access to different stretches of the route
- For the start at Millwall, the nearest stop is Westferry DLR station
- For the finish in Ham, Richmond station is the best starting point, followed by a short walk along the riverside
- September weather on the Thames can change quickly, so waterproof clothing and an umbrella are worth packing
- For a full day by the river, bring a picnic and settle at one bridge to watch a good stretch of the field pass by
