The Christmas Markets in Hildesheim 2026: What to Expect and Where to Go

Hildesheimer Weihnachtsmarkt 2026

The centrepiece of Hildesheim's Advent season is the traditional Christmas market spread across the historic Marktplatz and the neighbouring Platz An der Lilie. The wooden market cabins surrounding the Roland fountain echo the half-timbered architectural style of Hildesheim's old town buildings, creating a coherent and visually striking setting that draws visitors from across the region. In front of the Knochenhauer-Amtshaus, a magnificently lit Christmas tree anchors the square. The market runs daily from noon to 8 pm and is closed on 24 and 25 December; on 26 December it reopens from 2 pm.

Weihnachtspostamt Himmelsthür 2026

In the Hildesheim district of Himmelsthür sits Germany's oldest Christmas post office, established in 1967. Every year tens of thousands of children's letters arrive here from around the world, each receiving a personal reply from Father Christmas written by volunteers of Deutsche Post. During Advent, a branch of this legendary post office operates directly on the Christmas market at Platz An der Lilie under the name "Zum Rentier". Children can drop off their stamped wish lists there daily from 1 to 7 pm until 12 December 2026, with all letters forwarded to Himmelsthür for processing. To guarantee a reply in time for Christmas, letters must be submitted no later than the second Sunday of Advent. Letters can also be sent directly to: An den Weihnachtsmann, Himmelsthür, 31137 Hildesheim.
