The Ifestia Festival 2026 in Santorini
On Saturday, 19 September 2026, the Santorini Caldera will once again become the natural stage for one of Greece's most extraordinary festivals. Ifestia, named after Hephaestus, the ancient Greek god of fire and volcanoes, has celebrated the island's volcanic heritage every year since 1991. Thousands of visitors gather along the caldera cliffs in Fira, Imerovigli and Oia to witness this unforgettable spectacle.

Program
The festival begins shortly after sunset, typically around 9:00 PM local time. Since 2025, the evening opens with a breathtaking drone light show with live narration, in which formations of illuminated drones trace the story of Santorini's creation by volcanic fire across the sky. The drones form images representing the island's culture and gastronomy, including ancient coins, grapes and the iconic blue-domed churches. The grand finale is the volcanic fireworks display launched from the islets of Nea and Palea Kameni, bathing the entire caldera in cascades of light and colour. Fire fountains mimicking lava flows and thunderous explosions recreate the legendary Minoan eruption of around 1600 BC, the event that gave Santorini its extraordinary shape and identity.

The Ifestia Festival is completely free and can be enjoyed from all public caldera viewpoints along the villages of Fira, Imerovigli and Oia. Those wishing for a closer experience can book a caldera cruise or reserve a table at one of the many caldera-view restaurants.
