Around the restored Marktplatz, Rathausgasse and Eichplatz, visitors can enjoy crafts, Thuringian specialties and a varied family program.
Jena's Christmas Markets at a Glance
Jena Christmas Market: The Main Market Around Marktplatz and the City Center
The classic Jena Christmas Market spreads across Marktplatz, Rathausgasse and Eichplatz and traditionally opens with the cutting of a four meter long giant stollen followed by a tower fanfare. Every day at 5pm, festive brass music sounds from the town hall tower, while Thuringia's largest Christmas pyramid on Eichplatz forms a striking centerpiece. 2026 dates: November 25 to December 22, open daily from 11am to 9pm.
Historic Christmas Market: Medieval Charm Between Johannistor and Pulverturm
Along the old city wall ensemble between Johannistor and Pulverturm, the Historic Christmas Market takes visitors back in time with archery, blacksmithing, fire shows and medieval concerts. 2026 dates: November 26 to December 13, weekdays from 3pm and weekends from 11am, admission 2 euros for adults and a reduced 1 euro for children aged 5 to 14.
Fairy Tale Market and Children's Area: Family Program on Eichplatz
On Eichplatz, a colorful fairground area is dedicated especially to younger visitors, with a chain carousel, pony rides, free carriage rides with Santa Claus, plus puppet theater and storytelling on the market stage. This area runs alongside the main market from November 25 to December 22, 2026 and, like the main market, is free to enter.
