Every February, the small mountain village of Bukowina Tatrzańska in the Podhale region, at the foot of the Tatra Mountains, becomes Poland's winter capital of highland folklore. The Karnawał Góralski, held since 1973, traditionally runs for five days and showcases the music, dance and customs of the Górale highlanders in their original form. The carnival traditionally opens on a Thursday with a festive parade of bands and invited guests in horse drawn carriages through the village, followed by the official opening at the Dom Ludowy cultural center. Over the following days, the same venue hosts the Kolędnicy competitions during the day and the dance competitions in the evening. The final day closes with the Kumoterki, held on the grounds near the local ski station, where horse drawn sleighs race against each other.

Access to most daytime program points, including the parades, the Kolędnicy competitions and the exhibitions, is free of charge.
