Welcome to Loulé Carnival 2027

Every February, the southern Portuguese city of Loulé in the Algarve hosts one of the country's most beloved festivals. The Loulé Carnival is Portugal's oldest carnival parade and draws over 70,000 visitors across three days of floats, samba groups, giant puppets and biting political satire along Avenida José da Costa Mealha. Parades run daily from 3:00 PM and admission costs a symbolic €2, with all proceeds going directly to local social organisations and participating groups.

Highlights

  • Portugal's oldest carnival parade with more than a century of tradition
  • Three-day corso along Avenida José da Costa Mealha, daily from 3:00 PM
  • More than 600 participants and elaborate floats featuring political and social satire
  • Samba schools, Gigantones (giant figures), Cabeçudos and street entertainers
  • Portugal's only carnival to include participants with reduced mobility and special needs
  • Evening Carnival Gala Ball at the city's Festivity Hall
  • Admission from just €2 per day, with all proceeds supporting social causes

Program

The Loulé Carnival parade runs on three consecutive days: Fat Sunday (Domingo Gordo), Monday and Shrove Tuesday. Each day the corso begins at 3:00 PM on Avenida José da Costa Mealha and finishes around 7:00 PM. Each edition has a unique annual theme, transformed by Loulé's creative team into sharp political, social and sporting satire. Evening festivities include the traditional Baile de Gala de Carnaval at the Salão de Festas. Large video screens are placed along the avenue so visitors at the back can follow the parade comfortably.

Tickets

Entry to the cordoned-off parade area on Avenida José da Costa Mealha costs just €2 per person per day. This symbolic fee goes entirely to the participating associations, IPSS social institutions and community projects of the Loulé municipality. Tickets are available at the entrances on the day. For the evening Gala Ball, separate tickets are sold at the Cineteatro Louletano and at the door.

What Makes Loulé Carnival Special?

The Loulé Carnival stands apart from other Portuguese festivals for several reasons. As the country's oldest and most prestigious carnival corso, it has become the Algarve's most important tourism event of the low season, breathing life into the region when visitor numbers are typically at their lowest. The parade is known for its sharp satirical bite: local creatives spend months crafting floats that lampoon politicians, sports figures and global events with unmistakeable Portuguese humour. A further distinguishing trait is inclusion: Loulé is the only carnival in Portugal that actively integrates people with disabilities and limited mobility directly into the parade itself.

Visitor Tips

  • Arrive before 2:00 PM as the avenue fills up quickly on all three days.
  • Travel by train (Linha do Sul) or bus; parking in the city centre is extremely limited during carnival.
  • Costumes are welcomed and very much part of the Loulé carnival spirit.
  • February in the Algarve is mild compared to the rest of Portugal but can be rainy; bring a light waterproof layer.
  • Book accommodation in Loulé or nearby towns (Faro, Vilamoura, Albufeira) well in advance as the region fills up during carnival.
  • Keep €2 in small change ready for the entry donation at the gates.

Getting to Loulé

Loulé is located in the heart of the Algarve, around 15 kilometres north of Faro. Faro Airport (FAO) is the nearest international airport, approximately 20 minutes away. From Faro, Loulé is easily reached by train or bus. A hire car is a great option for exploring the wider Algarve but should be parked outside the city centre during the parade days. Visitors staying in Faro, Vilamoura or Albufeira will often find more accommodation options at better prices than in Loulé itself.
