Welcome to Kölner Lichter 2026
On Saturday, 1 August 2026, Cologne's Rhine riverbank hosts the 21st edition of Kölner Lichter, one of Europe's largest music-synchronised fireworks displays. Under the theme "The Magical School of Fireworks", hundreds of thousands of visitors gather along both banks of the Rhine to witness a spectacular show against the backdrop of Cologne Cathedral. For the first time in the event's history, the fireworks will be preceded by a drone show created by international team Nocturne Drones. Entry along the Rhine riverbank is free; premium ticketed options on ships and at the Sparkassen grandstand are available for those seeking reserved seating.

The event area and all catering stands along both banks of the Rhine open at 3:00 PM. Visitors are entertained through the evening by music broadcast over sound towers along the riverbank. By 7:30 PM, the approximately 25 passenger ships have departed the Cologne city centre heading towards Porz. At 8:45 PM, the traditional 91st Cologne City Eight rowing race begins between Rodenkirchen and the city centre.
Around 10:00 PM, the ship convoy passes through the city centre accompanied by a fire ship with near-continuous pyrotechnics. Crowds along the banks hold up their phone lights to create a glowing sea of small lights welcoming the convoy. WDR television begins its live broadcast at 10:15 PM. At exactly 11:00 PM, two 120-metre ships in the middle of the Rhine between the Bastei and the Tanzbrunnen launch the approximately 30-minute music-synchronised fireworks finale.
