Welcome to Krampuslauf Salzburg 2026
On 5 and 6 December 2026, the Old Town of Salzburg once again turns into a spectacularly eerie stage. Dozens of groups carrying heavy bells, wearing furs and elaborately carved wooden masks parade through the streets; the Krampuslauf Salzburg is one of the best known and most visited events of its kind in Austria and has marked the start of the dark season around St Nicholas Day for generations.

Program
On Saturday, 5 December, the afternoon opens at 5:00 PM with a procession through Linzer Gasse, followed by Getreidegasse from around 5:30 PM. The main event follows at the Dom and Residenzplatz, right next to the Christmas market, from roughly 6:30 to 8:00 PM, where several groups meet and perform for a large crowd. On Sunday, 6 December, an additional Krampuslauf takes place at "Zentrum im Berg" from 3:00 to 4:30 PM, a distinctive venue inside the Mönchsberg. Beyond the main Old Town run, numerous smaller Krampus runs take place across Salzburg's districts and the surrounding region throughout November and December.
Tickets
The Krampuslauf in Salzburg's Old Town is a free public street event; no ticket is required. Visitors combining it with the Christmas market can buy mulled wine, punch and regional treats there.
Visitor Tips
- Find a good spot along the route early, as crowds gather around the Dom and Residenzplatz.
- Keep hold of children during the run, as the Krampus figures move through the crowd with their switches.
- Warm clothing and sturdy shoes are essential in December.
- Traveling by bus or train is recommended, as the Old Town gets very crowded that evening.
- For a quieter experience, consider one of the smaller runs in Salzburg's outer districts instead.
