La Candelaria, also known as Candlemas or the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, is celebrated every year on 2 February in Madrid. The festivities commemorate the presentation of Jesus in the Temple and the purification of Mary. Program & Schedule: What to Expect in 2027
On 2 February 2027 the celebrations usually begin early in the morning with Eucharist services and the blessing of candles. Solemn Masses take place at the Parroquia de la Virgen de la Candelaria and other churches, often followed by processions through the surrounding streets. At the Cathedral of Santa María la Real de la Almudena and further churches, children of the community are presented. Traditional elements such as symbolic bullfights with wooden frames and costumed performers add a popular flavour to the religious programme and bring festive activity to the streets of Madrid.
