The Lauenburg Christmas Market is one of Schleswig-Holstein’s most atmospheric weekend markets: it is not set on a shopping street, but around the castle and Schlossturm high above the Elbe. It is organised by Wirtschaftliche Vereinigung Lauenburg/Elbe e. V. (WVL) together with the town of Lauenburg/Elbe. It traditionally runs on the second weekend of Advent, Friday to Sunday. Exact 2026 dates had not been posted on the WVL site as of September 2026; last season was 5–7 December 2025. The second Sunday of Advent in 2026 is 6 December, so the likely window is Friday 4 to Sunday 6 December 2026. Recheck wv-lauenburg.de before you travel.

Lauenburg is the southernmost town in Schleswig-Holstein, about 45 kilometres south-east of Hamburg and 25 kilometres from Lüneburg. Entry is free. Typical hours in recent years: Friday and Saturday 14:00–22:00, Sunday 12:00–19:00. The signature moment is Frau Holle sending fake snow down from the castle tower – plus fairy-tale characters, the Advent light and a walk through the timber-framed hillside old town on Elbstraße.

The 2026 Lauenburg Christmas Market is a three-day event, not a month-long Advent village. The ritual has been stable for years and is expected again – WVL publishes exact clock times with the annual poster. Friday: gates around 14:00, 16:00 church service with the KIELSCHWEINE, then St Nicholas and an evening stage opener. Saturday: brass or ensemble, story tent, Frau Holle at 17:30, mulled-wine party with a live band from 19:00. Sunday: earlier start around 12:00, shanties, Santa’s reading, Frau Holle again, often a living Advent calendar with the parish. Sunday closing has been 19:00.

Food stays North German and simple: mulled wine, glögg, egg grog, local punch (Chim Tim Gin from Lauenburg has poured a Glüh-Gin here), plus snacks and sweets. Stalls cluster tightly around castle and tower rather than stretching for kilometres. Walk down the hill and you add the Elbe old town – narrow lanes, the slim house at Elbstraße 97, the Palmschleuse lock and the museum. Christmas market at the castle and Schlossturm in Lauenburg

The core is the square around Lauenburg Castle and the surviving Schlossturm on Amtsplatz. The castle burned in 1616; the tower and Fürstengarten now frame the stalls, stage, carousel, crib and fairy-tale tent. The terrace above the Elbe becomes photogenic at dusk, with the light-moon, angels and tower illumination. Free parking sits at the Fürstengarten, a few minutes’ walk from the square.

Below the castle the old town drops steeply to the river. Elbstraße is the skippers’ street of half-timbering, cafés and the Elbe Shipping Museum in the Old Town Hall. During market days it is dressed in Christmas lights; tourist information is at Elbstraße 59 beside St Mary Magdalene. Skipping this descent misses what makes Lauenburg special. If you want family atmosphere without big-city noise, plan for that hour.

Advent magic on Elbstraße – the third Advent weekend

A week after the castle market, the “Zündholzfabrik” youth hostel (Elbstraße 2) joins cafés and the church for Advent magic along Elbstraße. In 2025 that was the third Advent, Sunday 14 December, 15:00–18:00, free entry: a tiny hut village outside the hostel, children’s town walks with the historic barber, a kids’ cinema, cafés through to Ruferplatz and the church. 2026 dates were not yet confirmed; the third Advent Sunday is 13 December 2026. It is the quieter, river-level counterpart to the castle square.

Mölln Christmas Market – every Advent weekend near Lauenburg

About 20 kilometres north, Mölln’s official 2026 dates cover all four Advent weekends: 27–29 November, 4–6 December, 11–13 December and 18–20 December. Outdoor stalls on the market square under a huge Christmas tree, plus an indoor gift hall in the Historic Town Hall. Friday 15:00–20:00, Saturday and Sunday 12:00–20:00, food service until 22:00 if needed, free entry. Island Advent in Ratzeburg 2026

The island town of Ratzeburg hosts Insel-Advent again on 5 and 6 December 2026: exhibitions, a bazaar, music and food on the island in Ratzeburger See. Last year’s hours were Saturday 11:00–18:00 and Sunday 11:30–17:00; confirm 2026 locally. Start Friday in Lauenburg, then add Ratzeburg or Mölln on Saturday. The Duchy of Lauenburg district is busy that weekend – arrive early.

Gut Basthorst Christmas Market near Lauenburg

Gut Basthorst (21493 Basthorst) is the large-scale contrast: about 250 exhibitors, five weekends, 8 EUR admission (under-16s free with an adult). Official 2026 dates: preview bazaar 20–22 November, then 27–29 November, 4–6 December, 11–13 December and 18–20 December, Friday–Sunday 11:00–19:00. Water fireworks, a children’s workshop, pony rides, punch and flame-grilled salmon. 4–6 December overlaps with Lauenburg’s castle market. Dogs on short leads are welcome; parking is free. Lüneburg Christmas City – 25 kilometres from Lauenburg

Hanseatic Lüneburg sits on the same RE 83 line. The town-hall market on Marktplatz is among northern Germany’s finest; 2026 dates will be posted shortly before opening (2025 ran 26 November to 30 December). Add the Historic Christmarkt (already listed for 5 December 2026), St John’s, Am Sande, the old crane and farmyard Christmas. Pair Lauenburg’s river hillside with Lüneburg’s brick town hall and you get two very different markets in one weekend. Visitor Tips: Travel & Accommodation in Lauenburg

• Getting there: Lauenburg (Elbe) station on the hourly RE 83 between Lübeck and Lüneburg. About 1.1 kilometres to the old town and tourist information, or bus 338 (Elbschifffahrtsmuseum stop). The bus station is roughly 500 metres from the information office; express buses link to Hamburg. By car use the A24/B209 or B5; park free at the Fürstengarten, or at Borkeplatz, Lösch- und Ladeplatz or Schüsselteich.
• Weather and clothing: The castle square is windy above the Elbe, and Elbstraße is a steep, often wet hill. Waterproof shoes with grip, warm layers and gloves are essential – Frau Holle’s snow does not heat you.
• Where to stay: Beds in the hillside town are scarce. Book early in half-timbered guesthouses on Elbstraße, at the Zündholzfabrik hostel, or day-trip from Hamburg, Lüneburg or Lübeck. Tourist information can help with rooms (November–February Monday–Friday 10:00–16:00).
• On site: After dark, start with the castle market and Frau Holle, then walk down the lit Elbstraße to the river. The Palmschleuse lock, shipping museum and Fürstengarten are better in daylight before the stalls open.
• Timing: Friday night is the ceremonial start with church and stage, Saturday is the fullest evening with the mulled-wine party, Sunday is shorter and more family-friendly. If you also want Mölln or Basthorst that weekend, give Lauenburg Friday or early Saturday – the castle square is compact and works in two to three hours.
