Welcome to the New Year's Eve and New Year 2026/2027 in Locarno
Locarno on Lake Maggiore marks the 2026/2027 turn of the year with Winterland on Piazza Grande: a winter village of light projections, live music, an ice rink and pop-up dining. The season runs from 19 November 2026 to 6 January 2027; the core New Year celebrations fall on the night of 31 December 2026 into 1 January 2027. Access to the square and to many pavilion concerts is free. The detailed New Year's Eve lineup for 2026/2027 had not yet been published in early September 2026.
Highlights & Attractions at New Year's Eve in Locarno
- Winterland on Piazza Grande with façade projections of the fairy tale “Nel cuore del tempo” on Piazza Grande and Piazza Magnolia
- Free concerts and DJ sets in the Raiffeisen Pavilion; recent editions included a midnight toast and live RSI television coverage
- Historic ice rink that is typically free to enter (skate hire charged separately)
- 18-hole ice mini-golf, carousel, Magic Tree ride and a zip line of about 250 metres over Piazza Grande
- Fondue Chalet, Chinoise Igloo and the 1920s-style Winterland Express bistro plus street-food stands
- The city's traditional New Year toast on the morning of 1 January on Piazza Grande – in recent years at 11:30 with the mayor and a complimentary aperitif
- A relatively mild lakeside climate for outdoor celebrating; Locarno itself does not usually centre the night on a large official midnight fireworks show

Program & Schedule: What to Expect in 2026/2027
Public New Year events cluster around Winterland: Piazza Grande, the Raiffeisen Pavilion, Piazza Magnolia, Largo Zorzi and Giardini Pioda. On 31 December 2025 the evening opened with DJ sets, continued with a Symphonic Disco concert, a midnight toast and an RSI live broadcast hosted by Fabrizio Casati; the city authorised a “Notte libera” with music limited until 02:00. Expect a comparable mix of live music, countdown and square party for 2026/2027 once Winterland and the City of Locarno release the timetable. Recheck winterland-locarno.ch and locarno.ch shortly before 31 December 2026.
New Year's morning brings the civic toast: speeches, chimney sweeps as lucky charms and an aperitif offered by the city, Casino Locarno and local partners. A major municipal midnight fireworks display is not the usual centrepiece in Locarno, and private fireworks have been restricted in past years. Nearby Ascona traditionally stages a New Year fireworks show over the gulf from Piazza G. Motta (often on 1 January around 18:30); the 1 January 2026 edition was cancelled, and the 2027 status was unconfirmed in September 2026.
Tickets & Admission for New Year's Eve Locarno
Entry to Piazza Grande and to most Winterland concerts is free, so the public celebration is listed at 0 Euro. You pay for food and drinks, selected rides (zip line, mini-golf, carousel) and restaurant New Year's Eve menus around the square, including venues such as Gran Caffè Verbano. Skate hire has been about 5 CHF per person in previous editions (roughly 5 Euro at the rate of 1 September 2026). Winterland is cashless (card/TWINT). Book dinners early; full menu prices for 31 December 2026 were not widely published in early September 2026.
Visitor Tips: Travel & Accommodation in Locarno
- Take SBB trains to Locarno station in Muralto; Piazza Grande is a short walk. The Centovalli Railway links Domodossola and Locarno. Drivers should use Lido or park-and-ride car parks – the old town is congested on festival nights.
- December by the lake is milder than in the high Alps, but nights are cold and often damp. Wear layers, sturdy shoes and a water-resistant jacket; snow at square level is not guaranteed.
- Reserve hotels in Locarno, Muralto, Minusio or Ascona early: New Year's Eve and Winterland weekends sell out. For a quieter night after midnight, stay a little away from Piazza Grande.
- Confirm the concert lineup, ice-rink hours and any municipal music curfew just before New Year's Eve. Do not assume private fireworks will be allowed.
- Families get the most from afternoon and early evening (rink, projections, kids' workshops); the pavilion party runs later and louder. On 1 January, join the morning civic toast before trains and car parks fill again.
