Lucerne Festival Summer 2026: American Dreams by the Lake
From 13 August to 13 September 2026, Lucerne Festival transforms the Swiss city of Lucerne into a world-class classical music destination on the shores of one of Europe's most beautiful lakes. Under the theme "American Dreams", the festival presents more than 120 concerts and events across 32 days, tracing the richly varied forms of American musical expression: from Gershwin and Bernstein to Steve Reich, Aaron Copland and Frank Zappa. The Opening Concert on 14 August is performed by the Lucerne Festival Orchestra under Music Director Riccardo Chailly. The Closing Concert on 13 September is devoted to Gershwin's Porgy and Bess, performed by the Chineke! Orchestra with the Cape Town Opera Vocal Ensemble under Kwamé Ryan.

Program and Theme
The 2026 Summer Festival is the first under the leadership of Sebastian Nordmann as Executive and Artistic Director. The theme "American Dreams" marks the 250th anniversary of American independence and explores how American composers shaped entirely new musical worlds: jazz, film music, folk, minimalism, and the avant-garde all woven through the programming.
Alongside the main symphony concerts at KKL Luzern, the festival offers a rich supporting programme: short concerts in the 40min series at Lukaskirche, the "In the Streets: City Stage" running 25 to 30 August with musicians from the Lucerne Festival Academy, and a performance by Hamburg techno brass band MEUTE in the final festival weekend. The Lucerne Festival Academy under Jörg Widmann performs Wolfgang Rihm's Tutuguri and presents world premieres by Liza Lim and other contemporary composers.
