In early August, the picturesque village of Praiano on the world-famous Amalfi Coast transforms into a sparkling sea of lights. The Luminaria di San Domenico traditionally takes place every year from August 1 to August 4 in honor of Saint Dominic. This historic festival attracts visitors from all over the world who want to witness thousands of candles illuminating the terraces, alleys, and squares of the town in a romantic glow.

Program
The festival spans four evenings from August 1 to August 4, 2026. On the first three nights, the spectacle begins at dusk (around 9:30 PM). The bells of the Church of San Gennaro ring, and hundreds of volunteers begin lighting the thousands of small candles that form a luminous pattern on the majolica tiles of the piazza. This is followed by fascinating fire and light shows accompanied by music. On August 4, the actual feast day of Saint Dominic, the festival reaches its climax with solemn religious ceremonies and a parish celebration, marking the end of the illuminated nights.
Tickets
Attending the Luminaria di San Domenico at Piazza San Gennaro in Praiano is a free public event (€0.00). No tickets are required. However, space in the square is limited, so it is highly recommended to arrive early.
Safety & Rules
- Handling open fire is strictly reserved for trained performers and volunteers.
- The piazza can get very crowded; please mind your valuables in the dense crowds.
- Extreme caution is advised around the floor candle installations to avoid destroying the artwork or getting burned.
Visitor Tips
- Plan your transport: Parking in Praiano (like everywhere on the Amalfi Coast) is extremely limited and expensive. Whenever possible, use the SITA buses or organized transfers from your hotel.
- Arrive in Praiano around sunset to secure a good spot in Piazza San Gennaro and enjoy the view of Positano and Capri.
- Combine the evening with dinner at one of the local restaurants overlooking the sea of lights – make sure to book weeks in advance!
- Since the evenings are warm, light summer clothing is sufficient, but comfortable shoes are highly recommended for navigating the many stairs along the coast.
