Welcome to the Madeira Nature Festival 2026

From 6 to 11 October 2026, the entire island of Madeira becomes a stage for nature experiences. The Nature Festival (Festival da Natureza) celebrates the archipelago's rich natural heritage; more than a fifth of the island is covered by the Laurissilva, a millennial laurel forest that has been part of the European network of biogenetic reserves since 1992 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. The festival is open to all ages and combines active nature tourism with culture, gastronomy and wine tourism.

Highlights

  • Hikes along Madeira's famous levadas (irrigation channels)
  • Canyoning at waterfalls on the north coast
  • Diving and snorkeling trips in the Atlantic
  • Mountain biking through forest trails
  • Boat trips along the south coast
  • Wellness and relaxation activities outdoors
  • Programs centered on ethnography and island culture

Program

The program is built around sports activities in nature as well as ethnography and culture of Madeira. Offerings range from levada walks to canyoning descents and open water swimming; this edition also adds wellness elements to the mix. Activities take place across the entire island, from the coast to the mountain peaks, giving visitors the chance to explore Madeira's most beautiful spots in an active way. The full daily schedule with exact times and meeting points is published on the official festival website.

Tickets

Most activities are free to join, as the festival is organized by Madeira's regional government. Some guided tours (such as boat trips or specific canyoning programs) may require registration; details are announced on the official website and the Events Madeira app.

Visitor Tips

  • Bring sturdy footwear and weatherproof clothing for levada hikes and canyoning.

  • A rental car is the easiest way to reach meeting points spread across the island.
