Program
From early evening, the seafront promenade Avenida do Mar and Praça do Povo fill up with music, food stalls and a festive crowd. From 11:40 PM, an audiovisual show with light projections and lasers on the harbour pier builds up to the big moment. At midnight, the main fireworks display begins: around 59 launch stations spread across the hills, the harbour, the ocean and even Porto Santo fire an eight minute choreographed spectacle of light and colour set to music. For the best view, book one of the many boat tours departing from Funchal marina well in advance, offering an open panoramic view over the whole bay.
Tickets
Access to the seafront promenade and public viewpoints is free. Those who want to experience the fireworks from the water can book a boat tour; prices typically range from 75 to 150 euros per person depending on the operator and should be reserved months ahead. Many hotels overlooking the bay also offer gala dinners with private viewing.
Visitor Tips
- Secure a spot on the promenade in the early evening (5 to 7 PM), as it gets very crowded later.
- Alternative viewpoints include Santa Catarina Park, the Fortaleza do Pico fortress, and the miradouros in Monte and at Pico dos Barcelos.
- Hotels and flights get booked out months in advance; plan early.
- Only limited buses run after midnight; staying within walking distance of the marina makes getting back easier.
- Bring warm clothing, as December nights can be cool.
