MaerzMusik is the Berliner Festspiele festival for contemporary music: concerts, performances, sound installations, music theatre, film and discourse across ten days in March. The 2027 edition runs from 12 to 21 March 2027 at the Haus der Berliner Festspiele (Schaperstraße 24, 10719 Berlin) and further venues across the city. The full programme is due at the end of January 2027; ticket sales usually open the same day at berlinerfestspiele.de.

Held annually since 2002 as the successor to the Musik-Biennale Berlin, MaerzMusik is one of Germany’s leading new-music festivals. Recent editions have been directed by Kamila Metwaly. The 25th edition in 2026 (20–29 March) presented 28 events, 16 world premieres and more than 7,500 concert-goers. 2027 will be the next ten-day run; as of September 2026 the theme, line-up and individual start times had not been announced.

Program & Schedule: What to Expect in 2027

The MaerzMusik 2027 programme had not been published at the time of research (September 2026). VisitBerlin and Berliner Festspiele give late January 2027 as the release date – matching 2026, when the brochure went online on 29 January. Until then, the shape of recent years is a guide, not a promise of specific works: an opening night with a large ensemble or installation, then a mix of evening concerts (typically 19:00 or 20:00), matinées, film, discourse and a finale that opens up the whole festival building. Evening box offices open one hour before each event at its venue.

MaerzMusik is not a standard subscription series. From 2015 Berno Odo Polzer framed it as a “festival for time issues” with the Thinking Together discourse strand; under Kamila Metwaly (director since 2022/23) listening practices, non-normative sound histories and immersive rooms have come further forward. 2026 opened with Georg Friedrich Haas’s “11,000 Strings” for 50 pianos at MaHalla, featured Meredith Monk as winner of the Berlin Grand Art Prize, and closed with the walk-in installation “I AM ALL EARS”. Haus der Berliner Festspiele – the hub of MaerzMusik in Berlin

The listed post-war modernist theatre at Schaperstraße 24 is the 2027 anchor. Main stage, side stage, lower stage and foyers are often used at once; the 2026 finale turned the whole building into a listening architecture. Getting there: U3/U9 Spichernstraße, Bundesallee exit, about a three-minute walk; buses 204/249 at Friedrich-Hollaender-Platz. Step-free access to foyer and stalls, lift to upper foyers. Limited on-street parking – public transport is better. Evening box office on site; daytime box office at Gropius Bau (Niederkirchnerstraße 7, closed Tuesdays).

Radialsystem – MaerzMusik by the Spree in Berlin

Radialsystem (Holzmarktstraße 33, 10243 Berlin) is a regular partner venue. In 2026 it hosted concerts and lecture-performances at 18:00, 19:30, 20:30 and 22:00, with prices around 20/15 EUR or 22/17 EUR. The industrial hall by the river suits electronics, extended instruments and hybrid forms that sit awkwardly in a proscenium theatre. S-Bahn Ostbahnhof or Jannowitzbrücke, a short walk. Two festival days at Radialsystem were part of the 2026 ten-day rhythm; 2027 scheduling follows the January programme.

silent green, KW, SAVVY and Spore Haus in Berlin

MaerzMusik spreads sound art and discourse through Berlin’s art spaces. Recurring 2026 addresses: silent green Kulturquartier (Wedding, a former crematorium), KW Institute for Contemporary Art (Auguststraße, Mitte), SAVVY Contemporary and Spore Haus. Installations, long-form listening and talks here sit closer to an exhibition than a subscription concert. Tickets may be cheaper or bundled; 2027 occupancy comes in January. Combining venues in one day means crossing Wedding, Mitte and Wilmersdorf – this is not a single campus.

MaHalla, Akademie der Künste and churches as sound spaces in Berlin

Large immersive works use halls and sacred rooms. In 2026 Klangforum Wien played Haas’s 50-piano installation at MaHalla, a former factory in Oberschöneweide; ensemble concerts ran at the Akademie der Künste, with further nights at St. Elisabeth Church and the Parochialkirche. Church acoustics and raw industrial space replace the orchestra pit. Oberschöneweide is further out on the S-Bahn than Wilmersdorf – allow extra travel time. Which halls return in 2027 is part of the January announcement; the mix of festival house, hall, church and art space is core to the brand.

Musikfest Berlin – the autumn counterpart at Berliner Festspiele

Compared with MaerzMusik 2027, Musikfest Berlin (artistic director Dr. Winrich Hopp) ran in 2026 from 28 August to 23 September and stages international orchestras, opera and contemporary scores mainly in the Philharmonie and large concert halls. MaerzMusik stays smaller, more experimental and multi-venue. Both sit under Berliner Festspiele – useful for year planning, not substitutes for each other.

Jazzfest Berlin and Theatertreffen around MaerzMusik

The same organisation runs Jazzfest Berlin (2026: 29 October–1 November) and Theatertreffen (already dated for 2027: 6–23 May). Theatertreffen der Jugend is set for 16–23 April 2027. For a spring 2027 culture trip, MaerzMusik (12–21 March) sits clearly before the theatre festivals; pairing it with the Berlinale (11–21 February 2027) is possible on the calendar but is a different kind of visit. Visitor Tips: Travel & Accommodation in Berlin

• Getting there: U3/U9 Spichernstraße or buses 204/249 for the festival house. Plot Radialsystem, silent green, MaHalla and the churches separately on BVG/S-Bahn – a Deutschland-Ticket or 24-hour pass pays off on busy weekends. From BER airport take S-Bahn into town; Berlin Hauptbahnhof is closer to Radialsystem than to Schaperstraße.
• Weather and concert etiquette: March in Berlin is cool and often wet. For halls and churches, new-music rules apply: move quietly, phones off, allow time for long, quiet works. Some formats are walk-through or without reserved seats – wear comfortable shoes. Exact durations and languages come with the 2027 brochure.
• Where to stay: Wilmersdorf/Charlottenburg for the festival house, Friedrichshain for Radialsystem, Wedding for silent green. March is quieter than Berlinale February, but book once the programme flags sold-out-risk nights. Many 2026 concerts sold out.

• Planning: Read the January PDF, check packages before singles, and do not underestimate travel between districts.
