Welcome to the Maritimer Engelkemarkt 2026 in Emden
From 23 November to 31 December 2026, the East Frisian seaport city of Emden hosts the Maritimer Engelkemarkt, one of the longest-running and most atmospheric Christmas markets in Lower Saxony. Stretching along the historic Ratsdelft inner harbour and through the adjacent Stadtgarten, the market takes its name from the golden virgin eagle on Emden's city coat of arms, affectionately known locally as „Engelke up de Muer." Entry is free throughout the entire market period. Please note that the market is closed on 24, 25 and 26 December.
Highlights and Attractions at the Maritimer Engelkemarkt in Emden
- Historic harbour setting: Festively illuminated museum ships moored at the Ratsdelft create a uniquely maritime Christmas backdrop, with their lights reflecting in the calm waters of the inner harbour.
- Large Christmas pyramid with the golden Engelke: The centrepiece of the market stands before the illuminated East Frisian State Museum (the historic town hall), offering mulled wine, punch and a focal point for the whole site.
- Exclusive igloo glass spheres: Stylish outdoor glass igloos with 360-degree views over the illuminated harbour are available to book for groups, corporate events and private gatherings.
- Daily living advent calendar: A new door of the advent calendar opens each day; from 1 December, Father Christmas visits every afternoon at 17:00 with treats for children.
- Engelke lottery: The popular annual raffle features thousands of tickets and high-value prizes, managed by local volunteer associations who receive a share of the proceeds.
- Satellite markets across the city centre: The „Lüttje Wiehnachtsmarkt," the Rathauskarree advent market and the Hafentor Winterdampf market complement the main event with handmade goods from East Frisia, Glögg and apple punch.
- North Sea culinary experience: Almonds, gingerbread and cinnamon aromas fill the air alongside East Frisian grog, mulled wine and regional specialities for an authentically northern German festive atmosphere.

Programme and Schedule: What to Expect at the Maritimer Engelkemarkt Emden 2026
The Maritimer Engelkemarkt Emden 2026 is open daily from 11:00 to 20:00, with extended hours until 21:00 on Fridays and Saturdays. The market runs from 23 November to 31 December 2026, closing only on the public holidays of 24, 25 and 26 December. The site covers a generous stretch of the city centre from the Ratsdelft to the Stadtgarten and Neuer Markt, making it one of the most spacious Christmas market areas in northern Germany. Musical performances, the daily advent calendar ritual and Father Christmas visits from 1 December provide a rich and varied programme throughout the six-week run. On 31 December, the market traditionally closes the year with the East Frisian „Elführtje" celebration, making it one of the few Christmas markets in Germany that remains open for New Year's Eve.
Tickets and Admission for the Maritimer Engelkemarkt Emden

Visitors arriving by train can use the Niedersachsen-Ticket or the Deutschlandticket for affordable connections to Emden Hauptbahnhof from across the region.
Visitor Tips: Travel and Accommodation in Emden and East Frisia
- By train: Emden Hauptbahnhof is directly connected to Bremen, Oldenburg and Münster. The Niedersachsen-Ticket and Deutschlandticket cover all regional rail connections to Emden, making this the most comfortable and affordable way to arrive.
- By car: Emden is accessible via the A31 motorway (exits Emden-Mitte or Emden-West). Parking in the city centre is limited during the market period, and the Rathausplatz area is closed to traffic throughout the entire market run for safety reasons.
- Dress for the North Sea coast: Emden is exposed to North Sea winds in November and December. Warm, windproof and water-resistant clothing along with sturdy footwear are strongly recommended for outdoor visits to the harbour market.
- Visit on a weekday: With a six-week run, the Engelkemarkt is ideal for a relaxed midweek day trip. Advent weekends and the days around 31 December are the busiest periods.
- Accommodation: Emden offers a good range of hotels and holiday apartments in the city centre and near the harbour. Booking well in advance is recommended for Advent weekends and New Year's Eve, when demand across the city is high.
