Matisse at the Grand Palais Paris: the defining cultural event of spring 2026

From 24 March to 26 July 2026, the newly renovated Grand Palais in Paris hosts the most ambitious Henri Matisse retrospective ever presented in France. More than 300 works from the final thirteen years of the artist's life bring together paintings, drawings, cut-out gouaches, illustrated books, textiles and stained glass in a single unmissable journey. Co-produced by the Centre Pompidou and GrandPalaisRmn, this exhibition is the cultural highlight of the Parisian spring 2026.

Why this exhibition is exceptional

Between 1941 and 1954, Matisse entered what he described as his "second life." Following a serious operation that left him physically weakened, he reinvented his practice at nearly 80 years old. Unable to stand for long periods, he turned to cutting directly into colour with scissors, elevating cut-out gouache into an autonomous visual language. Monumental works such as La Tristesse du roi, Zulma, La Danseuse créole and the Nus bleus series are presented together in France for the first time.

The exhibition also features the legendary artist's book Jazz (1947) in its entirety, accompanied by an original electroacoustic soundscape by composer Claudia Jane Scroccaro, making the experience both visual and immersive.
