Welcome to Meiningen's Christmas Magic 2026
From November 23 to December 21, 2026, the Marktplatz in the southern Thuringian theater town of Meiningen once again turns into a charming Christmas market. Around the decorated Heinrichsbrunnen fountain and in front of the imposing Stadtkirche, about 30 festively decorated huts invite visitors to stroll through the wintery old town.

Meiningen Christmas Magic: The Main Market at Heinrichsbrunnen
Meininger Weihnachtszauber, with around 30 lovingly decorated huts, forms the heart of Advent in Meiningen. In front of the Stadtkirche on the Marktplatz, an 8 meter tall Christmas pyramid, a varied stage program and performances by kindergartens and school classes create a festive mood. 2026 dates: November 23 to December 21.
Christmas Forest at the Töpfemarkt: A Winter Woodland in the Town Center
On the small Töpfemarkt square, a Christmas forest takes shape during Advent, with a romantic atmosphere, candlelight and fire bowls to warm up by. Choirs, brass players and barrel organ musicians add extra festive sound to this cozy corner of town. The exact 2026 dates have not yet been officially confirmed by the city of Meiningen; in previous years it ran alongside the main market.
Kunsthandwerkermarkt: Arts and Crafts at Elisabethenburg Palace
Traditionally held on the second Advent weekend, the Kunsthandwerkermarkt opens its doors in the Marble Hall of Elisabethenburg Palace. Rotating exhibitors from across Germany present high quality arts and crafts, complemented by a craft workshop for children and festive treats in the museum café. For 2026 the market is expected to take place on December 5 and 6, though the exact date has not yet been officially confirmed.
Meiningen Ice Magic: Skating Around the Heinrichsbrunnen
Alongside the Christmas market, the area around the Heinrichsbrunnen fountain turns into an ice rink known as Meiningen on Ice. The season traditionally starts already in October and runs well into January, considerably longer than the Christmas market itself. Exact dates and prices for the 2026/2027 season are published by the city of Meiningen from November onward.

Program and Schedule: What to Expect in Meiningen
The market is open Friday and Saturday from 11am to 9pm, and Sunday through Thursday from 11am to 8pm. The official opening is traditionally led by the mayor on the first day, accompanied by music and a small welcome treat for the first visitors. Throughout Advent, Santa Claus appearances, photo sessions and performances by local choirs and clubs keep the program varied.

Admission to the Meiningen Christmas Magic market on the Marktplatz is completely free. The Meiningen on Ice skating rink and the Kunsthandwerkermarkt at Elisabethenburg Palace each charge a separate, modest admission fee, typically announced closer to the season from November onward.
